Re: Kishkumen's Sunstone

I briefly went to Sunstone and presented a short paper with a really awesome panel on Mormonism and Psychedelics. Don Bradley presented with me for the first time in our long friendship. Rob Beckstead, who has been a key figure in this area of research, was in attendance. It all went over really we...

Re: The Jesus Myth: An unrelenting case for history

I've read every critique I've been able to get my hands on and haven't seen this. Can you point me in the right direction on this? Thanks, Marcus. I am referring back to a long, long discussion here several years ago, and comments made there. I'll see if I can hunt it up, but the board switchover r...

Re: The Jesus Myth: An unrelenting case for history

Carrier's work here that while his actual analysis may have been technically correct, his starting data is disputed considerably, thus skewing his results to the point where they are virtually meaningless. I've read every critique I've been able to get my hands on and haven't seen this. Can you poi...

Re: The Jesus Myth: An unrelenting case for history

I'd say my initial reaction is it is wildly different from what we'd expect if the gospels were meant as history. I think Dr Miller has a point in regarding the gospels less as any attempt at history and moreso at an attempt at cultic material used to instruct and inspire--not even really biographi...

Re: The Jesus Myth: An unrelenting case for history

It seems to me that in order to ‘make the jump’ from death to ‘life’ and to have a path of continued progress there would have to be some predefined mechanism or way forward besides ‘random chance’. Death doesn’t beget life by chance over and over again, does it? Or at all, when it comes right down...

Re: The Jesus Myth: An unrelenting case for history

There will forever be believers believing nonsense. It's always been. I don’t disagree. I would submit, however, that the message/proposition of life after death/eternal progression, and the means/miracle to make it so, are not “nonsense”. It may be the most important message in the world. But it i...

Re: Bart Ehrman takes on DCP’s empty tomb

Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence, but on the other hand weird things do happen occasionally, and some amount of weirdness is inescapable in early Christianity. Whatever happened to Jesus's body, his movement really did recover from his death. It may seem easy enough in hindsight,...

Re: The Jesus Myth: An unrelenting case for history

Its not really all that important to me to wonder whether Jesus lived. Honestly? I would have thought differently with all the time you spend talking about it. Actually, however, it does make ALL the difference as to whether or not he lived and was who the New Testament portrays him to be and milli...

Re: The Jesus Myth: An unrelenting case for history

Stem, because we disagree about various things in this subject I wish to say, I like you and have for the most part enjoyed these discussions. I hope vitriol has been avoided even though there are points of emotional tensions. I think the fact that on this board you can explore disagreements which ...

Re: The Jesus Myth: An unrelenting case for history

Hey Kish, been out a week or two doing other things. My apologies for a delayed response here. I will be interested to know what you think. I'd say my initial reaction is it is wildly different from what we'd expect if the gospels were meant as history. I think Dr Miller has a point in regarding the...
