Re: Sandra Tanner Knows Nothing About Religion per Sunstone
Sandra Tanner argued "nineteenth-century plagiarism," Brant Gardner "inspired history," David Bokovoy "inspired story," and Mark Thomas "great literature." Mark's was the standout presentation: he read portions of the Book of Mormon in the folksy Vermont accen...

I was raised Pentecostal. If I had a nickel for every failed prophecy I've heard, I could fill a jacuzzi with champagne.

Re: LDS philosopher Dennis Potter no longer a believer?
Very interesting news. Was not aware of this. I liked his explanation, too. The sort of moral reasoning that I really resonate with. I too stopped being a Christian largely for moral reasons rather than for historical ones.

Workin' on it. It won't be the ambitious, comprehensive treatment I wanted to write, though. Mostly it will cover 1847-1854.

Re: Nibley: Footnote faker or not?
Celestial Kingdom's general cynicism about Joseph Smith may be more of a pose for the sake of thought experiment, but he does come at this from a critic's perspective. (No offense, Celestial Kingdom! I love what you do with your scholarship.) It's less of a pose than you think. I've got 160 pages w...

Re: Klaus Baer on Hugh Nibley
Incidentally, speaking of Montanism, am I right that some LDS schoalrs have claimed that the Montanists were an early version of Mormons? This post may interest you: m Personally I don't think Montanism seems nearly as weird as gnosticism, but then I was raised Pentecostal, so I suppose it feels pr...

Re: Nibley: Footnote faker or not?
By request of Noel, I posted in another thread some letters by Klaus Baer in which he comments on Nibley's research. As a bonus, here's an old blog post I wrote on Nibley's footnotes (no longer online anywhere else, so this is an MDB exclusive ). A Footnote to the Debate Over Nibley's Footnotes A wh...

Re: Klaus Baer on Hugh Nibley
Did Baer Back Down? Recently I provided a letter from Hugh Nibley in which he asserted that during a lecture at BYU non-Mormon Egyptologist Klaus Baer was asked some hard questions about the Book of Abraham, and by the end of the session "was definitely in retreat." A letter from H. Micha...
