Re: Why Schryver didn't publish.
I think there is no question that the LDS Church has had a sort of Jekyl and Hyde relationship with historical scholarship, and that the Church really tried to limit what was being published (or to exercise some control over it). And then, of course, we were given the Joseph Smith Papers. My underst...

Re: Why Schryver didn't publish.
Not that I know of. My recollection (which may be faulty)was that the primary reason went something like this - the reason Will couldn't simply find another venue to publish his work after the MI decided not to publish it was that his contract with the Church described his project, the materials he ...

Re: Early Mormon Angels - Wings?
Kishkumen - I haven't done much with the cults in Asia Minor. But there is a lot of angel imagery in early Jewish synagogues. For much of the 19th century this was chalked up to Roman influence. But, no one really makes that kind of claim today. Judaism had a strong angelology. And early Christianit...

Re: Early Mormon Angels - Wings?
Joseph Smith was the main proponent of the idea that angels had no wings. He made a public statement to the affect around August of 1839. It comes in connection with Nauvoo temple teachings. And it doesn't really seem to have been much of an issue prior to that. So it wouldn't surprise me to see man...

Re: Coincidence?
It is sometimes difficult to remember what was going through my mind when I write things down ... but I think that what I was thinking was that the OP was asking if within the field of psychology there was a label put on to this sort of behavior as if it was some sort of deficiency or abnormal state...

Re: How Many Subscribers Does "Mormon Interpreter" Have?
I think it's more about the fact that the subscription is there to provide print copies, but this isn't the primary focus or delivery system for Interpreter. They use on demand print services, which means they don't actually do the printing themselves, and there isn't a lot of financial incentive fo...

Re: Coincidence?
There isn't such a term. In a sense, if you start with a foundational belief in the supernatural (in some form or other) then a supernatural explanation can be quite rational. It wouldn't be rational at all to someone else without such a foundational belief. The challenge is that your question prese...

Re: The Specter of the Book of Abraham Continues to Haunt Mo
Will asked me to post this for him: Hey Ben, long time no chat. I'm sending you this brief note because it recently came to my attention that I was being discussed on the Mormon Discussions Board. I have not even looked at that board for several years, let alone posted there. Anyway, I found the thr...

Re: The Specter of the Book of Abraham Continues to Haunt Mo
Aussieguy: Ben, in another life you would have been a good lawyer getting your guilty client off. No missing manuscript. He "used" the Book of Breathings. Look, I both agree with you and I disagree with you. I agree with you that I don't think that there was any manuscript that contained w...

Re: The Specter of the Book of Abraham Continues to Haunt Mo
Fence Sitter writes: Because the gold plates are not Nephite documents. The have already been appropriated, and already have a new context (which comes with a new meaning). And when symbols, images, texts, or anything else gets appropriated, they take on new meanings that don't have to be connected ...
