Re: Joseph coulnd't possibly have relied on Adam Clarke

Is the fact that Jackson is not credentialed a reason to dismiss him? But Jackson is credentialed, as I explained to Yahoo Bot on the other board. Not sure why he keeps claiming that Jackson "doesn't have the academic credentials" to review Wayment's articles. https://www.proquest.com/docview/30300...

Re: Early Modern English and asserting “proof” of Book of Mormon

I haven't checked everyone out on that thread, but as far as I can tell Nevo may be the only true scholar there. Thanks, Themis. I appreciate the compliment. But I'm not actually a scholar, I just play one on the internet ;) I'm actually a technical writer. I washed out of an MA program (twice) in ...

Re: Early Modern English Question

I continue to be amazed at the project at all. From what I understand—and I invite correction if that understanding is wrong—there is a critical text that was produced (published by Yale), a facsimile of the printer's manuscript, and then a series of commentaries on textual variants totaling five o...

Re: Wayment, the JST and AOF8

So, Wayment and Wilson-Lemmon found hundreds of instances of borrowing, yet have only shared 15 with the public as of this printing? It's been what, a year since the abstract? How many hundreds are we talking about here? Is it 800 or 200? Assuming plural hundreds means at least 200, then the 15 exa...

Re: Margaret Barker Decimates Mormonism at its Core

I rather do wish Larry Hurtado had been more clear. Exactly where was Barker misquoting Philo and how so? His vague "a recent essay" just doesn't cut the mustard... Hurtado did mention the article. I just cut it out of the quote (note the ellipsis). Anyway, here it is if you're interested...

Re: Margaret Barker Decimates Mormonism at its Core

I'd like to hear what other scholars say about Margaret Barker. She sounds flaky to me. Here's a sampling: "In sum, while Barker's exposition may sometimes give the thoughtful reader pause, on the whole, it strikes this reviewer as a tissue of speculation that self-destructs for want of demons...

Re: There is no case to be made for a historical Book of Mor

You can say that an already converted Christian has fewer barriers to belief in Book of Mormon historicity than someone unconvinced of Christian theology, but that's not doing enough work to be interesting to say. To be honest, I ran out of interesting things to say around 2010, which is why I hard...

Re: There is no case to be made for a historical Book of Mor

I don't think that solves most of the problems. Like the sermon on the mount. Revelation does not explain how the sermon found in the Book of Mormon is essentially a word for word copy of the one found in the Bible. If Jesus is able to come back from the dead and fly through the air, I think there'...

Re: There is no case to be made for a historical Book of Mor

Let's say it's been definitively established that resurrection is a real, albeit extremely rare thing. Let's say, for sake of argument, we can even somehow peer deep into history and know Jesus is one such example. Maybe the only example. That's doubtless an intriguing fact about the world, but the...

Re: There is no case to be made for a historical Book of Mor

It is true that if things that are wildly improbable and violate our understanding of how things work occur, then that establishes that wildly improbable events that violate our understanding of how things work occur can, in fact, occur. Agreed. And that was the only point I was making. What this d...
