Re: Why doesn't God protect Missionaries from harm...?

I think that you will have to ask God that question, in each individual case. You can start by asking why He did not protect Abel from Cain. All throughout the Bible there are incidents where innocent people are killed or abused without interference from God. It still goes on today. God is the only ...

Re: Response to Jockers, Criddle, et al., Now Available

Glenn, Marge, Bruce suggested that some talented authors may be able to consciously change their use of noncontextual words and phrases. In the 1993 study by Tim Hiatt and John Hilton, only one author was able to do so, and that was William Faulkner in "As I lay Dying." This book is descr...

Re: Response to Jockers, Criddle, et al., Now Available

Marg, Well I've seen Dan V. argue that J. Smith put on an act that he couldn't spell, write coherently or have knowledge re: walls around Jerusalem. It was all a well orchestrated act, according to Dan to fool his wife and the rest of the Book of Mormon translation witnesses. So since you are sayin...

Re: Response to Jockers, Criddle, et al., Now Available

The Hilton methodology would work for the many-authors situation if you had enough texts and they were all of the same literary genre. Hilton worried that some of the between-author differences that Larsen-Rencher-Layton detected might have actually been differences due to genre. For example, Mormon...

Re: Response to Jockers, Criddle, et al., Now Available

Glenn: I have sent Bruce a short email about the subject. I do not expect a detailed reply right now as the beginning of the fall semester is just days away and I expect that he is pretty well engaged in that at this time. Yes, I would guess you're correct about that. In the meantime, you might wis...

If Bruce is still paying attention to this thread, or if someone can contact him, there are several of us who would be interested to know whether he thinks indications from word-print studies are that the Book of Mormon was created by more than one author. Here's how marg put it: I asked Bruce as d...

Re: Response to Jockers, Criddle, et al., Now Available

Glenn: I did some checking and am informed that something similar to your suggestion, only better, is in the works. So I guess we will just have to await the results. From my own observation on the wherefore/therefore shift and certain error or dialect patterns the data seem to indicate multiple au...

Roger, there are no objective posters on this board. Everyone comes here with some kind of bias. That shoe fits many feet.

Re: Response to Jockers, Criddle, et al., Now Available

Glenn: I would certainly be interested in the results. Perhaps two teams, a Criddle team and a Schaalje team (?) could independently do the same experiment and then compare results. Where you might get into subjective trouble is: Then Nephi/Spalding can be compared against Nephi/Rigdon, and Nehi/Co...
