Re: "Mormons" documentary on Destination channel
I know schools like to emphasize their strengths.....but "world class"? I think that is a fair description. The Marriott school is rated #27 (just 11 behind NYU and Yale) by business week: m I think that ranking applies only to the MBA program. Last time I looked the undergrad program was...

Re: "Mormons" documentary on Destination channel
That's another one of those unforced errors where BYU makes itself look like a parochial school for people in their 20's, instead of a university. Sadly true. Had they just given the diploma there would have been no press and this would have been a non-issue. All the more tragic because BYU is acad...

Re: "Mormons" documentary on Destination channel
Really? Why? He produced a beefcake calendar that deliberately subverted the church's squeaky clean PR image they try so hard to maintain. And with missionaries, no less! You honestly don't think that's enough to get a bunch of stodgy old high councilmen angry enough to boot him out? I don't think ...

Re: Faith and Scholarship (in My Experience)
Notice your use of word believe. Just because Buddha and Jesus were religious leaders in no way makes their message true, even the original message. Jesus teaching us to be nice to one another is one thing, Jesus as the resurrected, atoning messiah is quite another. Well, sure. Religion will always...

Re: My message to John Dehlin
I really don't care what happened last year at Mormon Stories. I just want the drama to stop. Amen, Kish. All of this has started to negatively impact people's real lives and that is a shame. God bless John. God bless Dan & Bill. And God forgive me for contributing to this drama in the past.

Re: Faith and Scholarship (in My Experience)
Is there any other kind? I'm currently reading the Pali Canon which purport to contain the words of the Buddha. I believe the Buddha taught incredible truths and was a true religious leader. I feel the same way about Jesus. Sometimes it is very difficult to separate out the original teachings/inten...

Re: Faith and Scholarship (in My Experience)
How much weight should we give Joseph Smith's sincerity? I think considering sincerity helps us understand the context in which Joseph Smith operated. I ask because I think most false religious leaders think they really are communicating with God (e.g., Wayne Bent, David Koresh, even Warren Jeffs)....

Re: Faith and Scholarship (in My Experience)
If one believes in an inspired fiction then it would seem that they would also believe Joseph was inspired of God. Would that not lead them to possibly consider him a prophet of God? I think there are some major mental gymnastics with some of these ideas. Themis, I think you are right. If one does ...

Re: Faith and Scholarship (in My Experience)
2. Do you believe the Church and gospel of Jesus Christ have been restored through the Prophet Joseph Smith? Do you believe that [current Church President] is a prophet of God? What does this mean to you? I don't see how you can honestly answer 'yes' to number 2 without believing that the Book of M...

How about the question of the prophet speaking with God? Actually being a prophet? And what do you use as examples?
