Re: Folding like Darwin's House of Cards?

I’m pretty sure they could do that, yeah—and for a whole range of possible meanings of “archaic”. But even recognizing that there may be a range of meanings of “archaic”, only some of which would rule out Smith as a fraud, seems to be a step too far for Skousen and Carmack.

Re: Folding like Darwin's House of Cards?

Well, no, they're likely not; it's going to be a specialized topic in psycholinguistics if anyone has even looked at it at all. But it seems to me that people with their kind of training ought to understand the issue and have thought about it seriously. And if they had thought about it seriously the...

Re: Folding like Darwin's House of Cards?

I've asked this question a few times, too. Once I even asked Carmack. The answers haven't been encouraging. I was hoping someone would clearly grasp the point of the question and decisively answer it by pointing me to extensive literature on what makes the difference between Old-English-level archai...

Re: Folding like Darwin's House of Cards?

How much have Carmack and Skousen said about what exactly they mean by calling an expression archaic? I mean, Old English is archaic in such a way that nobody who hasn't specifically studied it could speak a word of it today if their lives depended on it. Shakespearian English is also archaic, howev...

Re: Spiritualism Movement

Interesting connection. Spiritualism launched in 1848 with the rapping of the Fox sisters, which is four years after the death of Joseph Smith, but Spiritualism took off so fast, from such a trivial base, that I think the culture of the time must have been dry tinder for supernatural excitement. A c...

Re: DCP Explains Why He's a Mopologist (And not a Mere "Apologist")

To be honest Mormon theology sounding more like Science Fiction than the theology of the traditional religious traditions is a feature more than a bug. Take a look at Tarik LaCour for example, when it comes to the philosophy of mind the guy is a strident materialist while at the same time he is an ...

Re: DCP Explains Why He's a Mopologist (And not a Mere "Apologist")

What partly gives me hope is new scholarship and the LDS disavowal of the term Mormon. If the LDS Church is no longer Mormon, then what do they care if this kind of theology goes by that moniker? So is this hopeful scenario one in which Mormonism splits into many more branches, of which your (let m...

Re: DCP Explains Why He's a Mopologist (And not a Mere "Apologist")

If I were to rewrite Mormon theology, it would probably be a synthesis of Christian theology, theurgical Neoplatonism, and Joseph Smith. I would toss Brigham Young's ideas out right away. ETA: Oh, and I would also look to Kabbalah. Note, however, that every element there, including the Kabbalah, ow...

Re: DCP Explains Why He's a Mopologist (And not a Mere "Apologist")

Isn’t it the only distinctively Mormon item of theology to assert that God is flesh and bone even now, and was once a mere mortal? This seems to me to make it hard to get started on Mormon theology. The being worshipped by Mormons is not what any other viewpoint would recognize as a conception of Go...
