Re: Infer, Imply, Affect, Effect - Those Terms.
So your understanding of implying and inferring is kind of like the two people in the conversation, one implies something and the other infers the meaning what what was implied? Yes, exactly. Implying is suggesting something, and inferring is picking up a suggestion. In this sense "imply" and "infe...

Re: Infer, Imply, Affect, Effect - Those Terms.
Implying is saying something without quite saying it. Inferring is hearing something that wasn't quite said. It's true that "affect" is usually a verb, and "effect" is usually a noun. If you affect something, then you have an effect on it. Unfortunately there are some more seldom-used words with som...

Re: I am amazed at the change.
I was thinking of children younger than ten, like two to six. By ten I think most kids do have a lot of moral awareness. Some are mean and some are kind; some have lived in circumstances that make one or the other of those easier to be.

Re: Washer Dryer preference
Hmm, the condensing dryer probably does take longer. We run it overnight, or in the day while we're at work, so it has plenty of time. A lot of our clothes we hang to dry, over a day or two, because we don't want them getting slowly shredded into lint by any dryer. That seems to be common practice h...

Re: I am amazed at the change.
Children, especially young ones, are often selfish, impatient, and inconsiderate. It's not really their fault that they're that way. They don't know any better. They feel their own desires and injuries strongly, and don't really understand that other people have needs and feelings as well. So I gues...

Re: 33 years with new questions
As I understand the history, Smith didn't really think he was going to be killed until the mob was there at his cell door, at which point it was obviously too late to try to save himself by recanting anything—it was too late for any words to do anything. Smith may have made some grandiose statements...

Re: Washer Dryer preference
Do people in North America use condensing dryers? These are models that don't vent their hot, damp air to outdoors, but instead let it cool in a radiator to condense out the water into a little tank. If the tank is full, the dryer will show a warning light and not run, so you normally empty the tank...

Re: 33 years with new questions
"NeueLicht" is hard to read because Licht is a neuter noun. You can have das neue Licht or you can have neues Licht . I don't think a native German speaker would pick that name. Maybe they would, for some reason I don't know. I don't have native-speaker instincts about German genders. I have the ins...

Re: Mormons arguing that “Mormon” is as derogatory as the N-word
It’s understandable that a church would want everyone to call it “the Church of Jesus Christ”. All churches that consider themselves Christian believe they are that, or part of that. For a Christian church to call itself THE Church of Jesus Christ, though, and not just a part of that body, is tantam...

Re: Collaboration Between Artist and Audience
That's an interesting point, except for me it's dauntingly large. The relationship between religion and politics must be too big a topic even for a fat book, let alone a thread. If anyone does undertake a book within the topic, just figuring out how to carve out a book-length subtopic is going to be...
