Re: Shulem Cracked the Book of Mormon Code, the Land of Nephi is now revealed! See for yourself! The Golden Key!

I certainly don't know the Book of Mormon well enough to notice a lot of details all lining up, so my judgement on this point is just vague and general. I'll let people who know the material better settle it. The point about whirlwinds makes me wonder, though. Does the Book of Mormon really use that...

Re: Shulem Cracked the Book of Mormon Code, the Land of Nephi is now revealed! See for yourself! The Golden Key!

I don't think there's ever going to be a one true answer for exactly where in the Americas Smith meant the Book of Mormon lands to have been. I think there is no real answer, because I don't think Smith meant to give enough detail to pin down any one location unambiguously. I think instead he must h...

Re: gemli on the silliness of angel-borne 'plates'

Who the heck professes absolute certainty that no plates of any kind, not even a stack of lead shingles wrapped in a sheet, ever existed? If really there are any skeptics of Mormonism who leap bizarrely to such strong but irrelevant conclusions, then I fully agree with Peterson that they are foolish...

Re: Brigham Young, critic of racism

Those sixties Mormons weren’t demons, no. But they clearly weren’t led by a prophet of God.

Re: Revisiting the 2016 neuroscience study

What if God wants us to believe, but instead of giving us evidence that would lead us to believe rationally, gave us instincts for faith? It might be a somewhat cynical educational approach by God, like a teacher getting kids to learn arithmetic by rewarding them with candy. The kids would reach the...

Re: Peterson the historical skeptic

Everybody can be somewhat invested in a viewpoint. You can get used to thinking of yourself as someone who doesn't like spinach and be reluctant to admit it when a spinach dish isn't so bad. Not every viewpoint is held strongly, however. Lots of beliefs are subject to change with only modest inducem...

Re: Peterson the historical skeptic

“Yea, I make a record in the language of my father, which consists of the learning of the Jews and the language of the Egyptians.” Why would the author tell the reader of his text what language he was reading? It's not inconceivable that a real writer would discuss their choice of language. I somet...

Re: Daniel Peterson, Water Dowser

How is there no mechanical way for the hands to make the rods cross? The dowsing method I know uses L-shaped rods; you hold the short arm of the L in your fists, vertically, and let the long end stick out parallel to the ground. You're supposed to keep your fists very loose, so that the rods can swi...

Re: Peterson the historical skeptic

Right. That's the kind of thing I mean by saying that calling the Book of Mormon a fraud is a literary judgement on its genre, not just a character assessment of its author. The common feature of all the superfluous yet inadequate details is indeed just that they are things that Joseph Smith could e...
