Re: How Many People Did the Mopologists Baptize?

Kudos to Dr. P. for today’s blog entry. I don’t know whether it was influenced by this thread or not, but it surely has to be seen as an improvement over the dreadful travelogues—or, even worse, the slams on Christopher Hitchens and Jonathan Neville. I can only hope that he doesn’t wind up recyclin...

Re: How long/intensely did you believe in the historicity of the Book of Mormon?

The answer for me is “Never.” I never understood as a kid why my history classes at school didn’t include Book of Mormon material. And then, when I was 10 or 11, I had a Sunday school teacher who said something to the effect of, “Joseph had the Gold Plates, but he didn’t show them to anyone! And th...

I've got to say, the LDS missionaries taught me well. If it were all true, I'd be deserving of outer darkness.
Whether is is true or not, you are not.

Re: The burden is now upon those who deny the ancient origins of the Book of Mormon

I think a lot of people who get into apologetics are unaware that apologetics isn't an academic discipline. "Good" apologetics may require some kind of "scholarship" in a colloquial sense, but there is no academic rigor. Hence, MG's misconception that historicity could ever be a matter of religious...

Re: The burden is now upon those who deny the ancient origins of the Book of Mormon

Nearly a century before Joseph Smith, we have a striking example of religious-like devotion to a fabricated epic narrative, in the supposedly rescued, proto-Scottish Ossian poems invented by James Macpherson. These exerted major influence upon European and American literature. What I find relevant ...

Re: Creepy Jesus

Why not? But your amusement prompted me to ask how the natural functions of an infant incarnate deity could (for believers, from which include me out) be the object of serious reflection.
And your serious reflection was very nicely written!

Re: The burden is now upon those who deny the ancient origins of the Book of Mormon

I think you're missing the larger issue - historicity is an academic question that by definition can't be answered with faith. The moment you try to make an appeal to faith or miracles you've left the topic of historicity altogether - the same would apply if you tried to bring God into a conversati...

Re: Creepy Jesus

Well, when I believed in this stuff I found it instructive to meditate on what it meant for the creator and sustainer of everything to fully take on human nature, including the limitations of childhood, and before that early infancy. The hymn "In the bleak midwinter" tries to approach the implicati...

shulem,
why the choice of this rather unpleasant photograph?

Mother Mary had to change his diapers or what ever they called those things in those days. Is that creepy? I am not sure just what is pointed to as creepy. Is this a taste or style sort of judgement?
Poopy diaper Jesus. Wow. Gross.

Re: The burden is now upon those who deny the ancient origins of the Book of Mormon

All of the pre-third century BCE Jewish prophets whose existence is certain did not believe in any of those things. That's because those ideas evolved in a certain historical context. That context was influence from Persian theology (from where we get the idea of evil cosmic beings) during the Pers...
