Re: Latter-day Saints have the highest rate of weekly church attendance
Simple math will tell you that this percentage is not based on the membership numbers the church reports. Church claims 17,000,000 members. Church says there are about 24,000 wards. 17,000,000 divided by 24,000 = 708 members per ward. 708 x 67% = 481 members in the pews each week. My guess that even...

Re: Temple Sealings of Dead People that Were Married More than Once
The devil is in the details. For fun, try and get a Mormon to explain how it’s all going work. Very quickly they’ll turn to “God will sort it all out, we just need to have faith” as a way of ending the chat. It always leads to that, at which point I ask: "What is the point of claiming to possess Go...

Re: Why was the Book of Abraham written in Egyptian and not in Greek?
I believe that the LDS Apologist position has been that when the Book of Abraham was taken to Egypt, it was translated in Egyptian there. LDS Apologist John Gee stated : Nothing compels us to assume that the book of Abraham must necessarily have been written by Abraham in Egyptian and preserved in ...

Re: Why was the Book of Abraham written in Egyptian and not in Greek?
My point was that language evolves so much, in order to keep an original text it needs to be updated for accuracy, which Dr. Ritner pointed out in the 13 hour MS/RFM interview. I agree. Smith consistently relied on a very limited 19th century view of the world to produce scripture. And, I think, he...

Re: Why was the Book of Abraham written in Egyptian and not in Greek?
I would think that over the 1600 years a new copy would need to be updated at least every century or so, if not sooner, just to keep it close. Asking a person to translate something they can't read only happened in 19th century New York. Actually, it didn't even happen in New York then either. It w...

Re: Why was the Book of Abraham written in Egyptian and not in Greek?
fence sitter, I thought the idea was the book was written by Abraham who lived well before Greek had significant presence in Egypt. (Kishkumen, if that simple jump to a conclusion is wrong, please advise me.) Kishkumen has interesting observations about an Egyptian instead of a Canaanite family lan...

Re: Why was the Book of Abraham written in Egyptian and not in Greek?
Thanks Kishkumen, I also recommend Scott Trafton's Egypt Land on 19th century Egyptomania and Race. I do understand why Smith made such a claim. I should have been clearer in my OP. My remarks were directed at those who are still trying to defend Smith's claim that he translated the Book of Abraham ...

Why was the Book of Abraham written in Egyptian and not in Greek?
Michael Chandler showed up in Kirtland at the end of June 1835 with what remained of a larger collection of Egyptian mummies and papyrus rolls that he had been exhibiting and selling off throughout the United States. Upon his arrival, Joseph Smith examined the rolls and said that “one of the rolls c...

Re: Science is wrong sometimes, therefore anything is possible
Shouldn't a religion that seeks to portray itself as the only true religion, avoid arguments that places it at the same level as all others?
