Re: Total Mormon Stupidity

JD1 - if loan shifting is perfectly viable for nouns (horse = tapir/deer/whatever; steel sword = wood sword/obsidian club/whatever), how can we be sure that other nouns mean what they say? For example maybe temple really means maizeburger stand/Toucan preserve/whatever. Is that an implication you f...

Re: Total Mormon Stupidity

I don't know too much about Tapirs, or the sources this guy uses, but appealing to the concept of loan words does not seem to me too far fetched. It gets away from the unrealistic idea of an isomorphic translation and recognizes that our animal taxonomies are not eternal verities. It also beats atte...

Re: Why do many Mormon women not experience orgasm?

Just lurking bit tonight during a long conference call and having read this I just have to give my testimony of having lived in non-child, married housing complex with thin walls at BYU. This problem with female orgasms did not apply to my neighbors. This was particularly unfortunate at around 3:00 ...

Re: LDS Anthropologist Daymon Smith......

Interesting...it almost looks as if he views this as a devolution. I'll have to listen to the podcast. In any event, to me there is not much discontinuity between corporate LDS of today and theocratic LDS of yesteryear, at least in terms of not being shy about a this-worldly focus. Our church was f...

Re: LDS Anthropologist Daymon Smith......

LDS Anthropologist Daymon Smith on Post-Manifesto Polygamy, Correlation, the Corporate LDS Church, and Mammon m In this incredibly fascinating 4-part series, long-time Mormon Stories supporter Andrew Ainsworth interviews Daymon Smith Ph.D., a Mormon Anthropologist and the author of a new book calle...

Re: Devastating conversation.

Perhaps he's not thinking straight. I would tell my dad that even though we disagree I want to always know that my parents will love me and accept me. I would also point out the statements he made that gave me the opposite impression. Who knows if that would help, but perhaps it would also be useful...

Re: Reexamining personal revelation

Two groups? I would think there are many different groups. Once again I concur with your correction of my phrasing. I’ll have to give you a call whenever I feel the need for more nuance :). Can we just assume I'm just being pragmatic in my word use in these cases? “Maybe it says a lot more then you...

Re: Reexamining personal revelation

True. My point was is that while it is often assumed that people are interpreting the same nuero-biological experience in a culturally idiosyncratic matter, the fact is we may be dealing with different experiences entirely. It would be hard to tell if you are having the same experience if other peo...

Re: Reexamining personal revelation

I couldn't help but think of the venerable Mormon tradition of "believing blood" when I read this :) Interesting so many with believing blood don't believe :) Hey man, some of you guys just may not have the force running through your veins, as much as us believers. Not everyone can be a J...

Re: Reexamining personal revelation

I think the fine distinctions in revelatory experience, interpretation and practice among different religious traditions is often glossed in these discussions. That's because the distinctions are usually not so fine. True. My point was is that while it is often assumed that people are interpreting ...
