On a similar note, I used to think that when TV shows removed the "Jesus" expressions, and the God word from the phrase "God dammit," that this was an attempt to appease theists who were offended when God was being used in cursing. But I think I now realize it has nothing to do ...

(There was another recent thread dealing with this same issue, as I recall.) You're right. I didn't see it mentioned before, but now I've found it -- the one titled "The Internet and the Future of Mormonism" -- based on the Des News coverage of the same speech. Sorry to rehash old materia...

LDS youth urged to share faith on Web

This article appeared in the Salt Lake Tribune Friday. M. Russell Ballard spoke at BYU-Hawaii. Some tidbits: An LDS Church official has urged young people to blog, create Web sites and take advantage of social networks online to help improve people's perceptions of The Church of Jesus Christ of Lat...

Oh, I love Xmas. For me, it's a secular holiday. When my kids were younger, I still read the Xmas story to them, but discussed it as a myth. My atheism doesn't detract from the holiday at all for me. We used to do the secular holiday thing, concentrating on the giving and togetherness, but I found ...

I've come to approach all holidays as good excuses to get a few days off to party and have fun times with family and friends. I can't decide. Am I supposed to be depressed, hopeless and bitter because I have no deity, and therefore no purpose; or am I supposed to constantly "eat, drink and be ...

One thing I noticed was your comment about Romney seeing his dad marching (with MLKjr) with his "spiritual eyes." A couple of people (including DCP) appeared to be quite offended by it. Could that have been enough to precipitate the ban, I wonder?

Holiday celebrations for non-believers

Here's a question for those here who are not Christians, or even theists. Do you still observe Christmas, or do you make a point of celebrating in other ways? As for me and my house, we have been celebrating the Winter Solstice for several years now. As a result, our holiday is over already. We had ...

I once heard Professor Ed Firmage (UofU PoliSci) predict that the women/priesthood policy would eventually be reversed, due to the fact that the ban is just custom rather than doctrine that is based on scripture. That surprised me, but I couldn't think of any scriptural basis either. However, that w...

My nephew in the Ukraine gets an hour each P-Day in an Internet café to write e-mail. My niece in New Jersey, on the other hand, has her own blog where she journals and posts photos. They are also allowed to call home on Christmas and Mother's day. I always thought that was a bit rude to us dad's (n...

We aren't accountable as sinning for random thoughts. I think it was President McKay who said "you can't stop the seagulls from flying overhead, but you don't have to let them sit on your shoulder." Flying overhead a sin? No. Sitting on the shoulder a sin? Yes. Charity, I think you left t...
