This "ticking time bomb" scenario is so completely bogus. Such a hypothetical situation is extremely unlikely to ever happen except in a Hollywood drama. How in the world would you 'know' for sure they had the information you need so you could beat it out of them? The reality is that you h...

I don't know that we teach that. It's more of a couplet than anything else. That gets into some pretty deep theology that we don't know very much about.

When did Joseph Smith Jr. speak as a prophet and when did he speak as a man? There seems to be no consistency on that head. Certain of his pronouncements are taken as doctrine, while others are dismissed as opinion and speculation, seemingly based on whether an apologist agrees with it. Take, for ex...

I believe the lack of experience and knowledge is a big advantage. The biggest selling point the church has is not doctrine, but the dedication of the members, and the positive influence (at least attributed) that it has on their lives. What's more, the most effective way to sell it is by the passio...

Yes, I had a pure toe-head dooryo in Kobe (78) that got so many looks you'd think he was a celebrity! He got us alotta free meals and "foots-in-the-door," but not many baptisms. They were more interested in him than our message.... Then there are the sister missionaries. In one area, my d...

Don't remind me... I seem to be the only person who got stuck with the Quilter genes. Truth be told, I'm much more Quilter myself. The stocky, "covered with body hair" heritage won out, tragically. I'm just hoping for some of that Johnson longevity. My mom, at 86, still looks like she cou...

I went to Kanazawa a couple of times for zone conferences, but that's it. I never got to Yokkaichi. Shiroko must've been shut down by the time I got there, since I've never heard of it. Although Toyohashi was still open, I never made it there, either. Was Komaki still an active area when you were t...

For some reason, I don't recall you being 12 feet tall... *Look... Godzilla!* He he. It's those tall Johnson genes. As Shades says, it's changing quickly, but 30 years ago we tended not to lose each other in crowded trains and subways (you've probably heard tales of how tightly they jam people in),...

You were in Nagoya? That's where I went! I was there from '90-'92. You might be interested in my weblog, wherein I transcribe my missionary journal. Cool, I'll check it out. For you, then, a couple more details. The bike pic was taken in Kanazawa, the green guy and the little obaachan were both in ...

Apparently, you didn't read the part of my post where it was the Democrats that voted against the civil-rights legislation. It wouldn't have passed without Republican votes. It was Abraham Lincoln, a Republican, that freed the slaves. You can't rely on the party names of the past to paint anyone no...
