Re: Jesus is a Roman god
Systematic theology was a Greek invention. It springs from Greek philosophy, and it fully flowers in the Golden Age of Neoplatonism. One can't realistically speak of Christian theology in a historical way without taking the influence of Neoplatonism and even Hermetism into account, too. When we rea...

Re: Jesus is a Roman god
…in the end there was a compromise called the Trinity, which made God three persons in one. The method for creating that compromise was a culturally pagan one. It never could have happened in Judaism proper. I'd be interested if you could elaborate on this point a little. Is it that the reasoning b...

Re: Jesus is a Roman god
If this is so, then my entire belief system is wrong. Why believe in a Bible associating the stories to a being I imagine that wasn't involved at all? The meaning of god now and then would be two entirely different things. It makes sense to me that the old testament in particular are actually human...

Re: Jesus is a Roman god
Sometimes when I hear bits of the Bible or think about it, I wonder if "god" in the Bible is actually really more like a king, someone who is alive and walking the earth. I don't understand why God was so involved then and not now and sometimes I can imagine these prophets being told what to do by ...

Re: House Republicans in Disarray
But now, I'm starting to think many (most?) GOP congress critters are just as idiotic as their voters. It's the feedback loop between the base and the propaganda organs. At least since the Tea Party wave in 2010, a growing number of House Republicans have been elected from the segments of the publi...

Re: House Republicans in Disarray
A while back I asked where JFK was, meaning that I didn't understand why there weren't any charismatic younger Democratic candidates for President. Now that I think about it, US federal politicians in general seem to be a weirdly mediocre lot. The USA is an industrialised nation of nearly 340 milli...

The worst piece of music I've ever heard is this. (If it doesn't seem that bad to start with, wait about 40 seconds.) If I ever start to like it, shoot me.huckelberry wrote: ↑Tue Oct 10, 2023 1:22 amHorrendously foul and distasteful song. Ok you stirred my curiosity. What sort of song would qualify here?

Re: House Republicans in Disarray
I agree...in that everything about the above says Gaetz and what he represents are clearly a threat to the entire democratic system. The issue is if bipartisan government and compromise is worth supporting. Apparently not. Bipartisanship is not an end in itself. The key question when making any com...

Re: DarthJ is a prophet
Several years ago, before I showed up on this board, I wanted to read a coherent account of Mormonism's early history, because I wanted to know more about where the creation of the Book of Abraham fit in with everything else. I didn't want to get a book by an actual Mormon, for obvious reasons, but ...

Re: Republicans in Disarray
Congressional supplicants of the Cult of Trump want their glorious leader to be the new House Speaker. A couple are actually making the attempt. But although the speaker doesn't have to be a member of the House, apparently there's a rule that the speaker can't be under indictment for a crime with a...
