Re: Mormonism and Human History

It is possible to consider that your observation is accepting a couple of religious ideas. One that God puts some primary value on people correctly recognizing him and second that it is easy for God to reveal him or herself to us. I think it is possible God is not hiding but that it is difficult fo...

Re: Making Covenants

Religion then is something that I look at with open eyes. Knowing that it is not improbable that a loving God would intervene in the world to reveal His truth. What? With all due respect, this is as contrary to how you present as a statement could be. But it's conditional on the (undemonstrated) ex...

Re: Church comments on SEC settlement

Is the defence of the church actions that the senior leaders just wanted to trick members into doing the right thing, because otherwise the members could not be trusted to do the right thing for the right reason? Surely not! Or is this really the kind of wool-pulling that the Mormon god is OK with? ...

Re: Making Covenants

Here is my subjective view, based on what you are saying: What I'm seeing, in effect, is that your religious life is built on a foundation of possibilities, with each successive layer being another set of possibilities. I don't know what makes them "real" in your eyes, but I think it's worthwhile n...

Re: Making Covenants

I have not read anything of Nibley since the early 1970, and could not, from memory, even tell you what I did or did not read then. So my knowledge on this subject is effectively zero. But what you quoted does not, to my mind, supply evidence. Someone draws parallels - great, if you believe it. Her...

Re: Church comments on SEC settlement

If only there were an entire thread dedicated to the illegality of the Mormon church’s actions. If only there were some sort of, I dunno, document that spelled it out for even the dumbest of Mormorons who can’t use their brains … - Doc Well, that didn’t really help me out. Just answer my question. ...

Re: Making Covenants

If Abraham was never in Egypt, or the stories of the Old Testament Abraham were not consistent and contemporaneous with the story of Abraham in Egypt, then you do not have the single historical Abraham that you need. Did you ever read Nibley’s “Abraham in Egypt”? I have not. A commenter here: https...

Re: Making Covenants

Whether Abraham was a historical person from a modern perspective is beside the point. I don’t think it is. I’ve stated why. First things first. Regards, MG Read my comment - the one immediately above yours. The three points are ALL needed to establish the Abraham you are looking for. If it can be ...

Re: Making Covenants

Sure. I don't have to do much work because the Mormon Abraham story is even more unbelievable than the Christian Abraham story. Joseph Smith claimed Abraham wrote the Egyptian charactors on the Book of Abraham "by his own hand upon papyrus." We now know that the papyrus has nothing to do with Abrah...

There are reasons to look at the historical Abraham as being a distinct possibility.
There are reasons to believe the earth is flat as being a distinct possibility.
Highly probable, too - right?
