Re: Still gemli's gems: still the best reason to read a blog

... the answer will never be a deity or any other "being," any more than water boils because the devil is taking a bath. This sounds cute from gemli but actually he has walked right into a standard theistic argument. When I ask, "Why is this water boiling?", I often find it to be a good answer that...

Re: The Most American Religion

Could we shift the discussion back from quizzing each other about religious practice to the originally linked article? This feels more like a derail than natural drift. We can always have a new thread for who has what symbols in the house. The article seemed to have an interesting point that Mormoni...

Re: Witnesses Trailer a Triumph

That's going to be a tough call apologetically. If you show the plates clearly in the film, people will wonder why the original plates were never shown that clearly to anyone. If you don't show the plates, though, it's going to be hard to avoid making them a mystery Maguffin like the Raiders Ark or ...

Re: gemli's gems: STILL the best reason to read a patheos blog

The hill that DCP repeatedly insists on dying upon is this whole idea that you can be both smart/well-educated *and* you can still believe in Mormonism. So much of his life and his Mopologetics have been devoted to trying to advance that argument, and I can only guess at the depths of insecurity th...

Re: Regenerating Mormonism: Is Kwaku the new Doctor?

I've never read Heidegger but I think a certain amount of subjectivism is just painful honesty. Humans aren't eternal pure intellects. We have hindbrains full of ulterior motives and we don't have time to figure everything out. At some point it's wiser to accept that and make the best of it. Perhaps...

Regenerating Mormonism: Is Kwaku the new Doctor?

The long-running British sci-fi series Doctor Who features a time-traveling alien protagonist who can live arbitrarily long by periodically "regenerating" to adopt a new adult humanoid body. This convenient in-world feature has allowed many actors to step into the role of The Doctor without having t...

Re: A big hello

If this was Ed Goble then it is too bad if he's left now. I thought his Book of Abraham theory was pretty clever. If he just relaxed and dialled it back a bit, he'd be an interesting guy to have around. As Lem says, though, he appears to have some unfortunate handicaps in interacting with other peop...

Re: SeN: "Hope for immortality" is a Useful Salve for Childhood "rape and strangulation."

I've only read one or two Elizabeth George and don't remember them well. I agree about Adam Dalgliesh as a believable man. I was never sure how seriously to take him as a poet, but I reckoned that was okay, since his poetry was supposed to be an oddball sideline for a police officer that no-one knew...

Re: SeN: "Hope for immortality" is a Useful Salve for Childhood "rape and strangulation."

Already done, at least hormonally. Yes, actually I heard this conclusion years ago from a friend who worked for a big drug company selling contraceptive pills. There's no real reason to keep bleeding each month; you can just stay on the pill and it doesn't cause any problems. In fact what I remembe...
