Re: What exactly Is Wrong with Polygamy anyway?

Plural marriage (polygamy) is a part of the Gospel doctrine and is a ceremony of the old times. God ordered Joseph Smith to revive it in the latter day so if anyone is dissatisfied with it please blame God (if you dare). If polygamy was bad, then it was bad enough to prove that God did not actually...

Re: The Atonement makes zero sense because Jesus' "suffering" was merely an inconvenience

I think there may be something to the Atonement and that it may be important, but all the explanations of the Atonement that I have heard must be garbled somehow, because they don't make sense to me, either. I'm worried about dementia as well. My mother-in-law is suffering from it now, and it's sad ...

Re: The coastline of England can’t be measured, therefore the Book of Mormon can’t be disproven

Maybe it's just the awkward Patheos formatting, with interspersed ads, but I didn't see where the linked blog post by Peterson talked about English coastline. That's an interesting topic but I didn't see him raise it. Instead he seems to mention gravity and then focus on formal logic. Peterson doesn...

Re: The axiom of choice

Perhaps this thread deserves an extended life to discuss religious verbal tics in general. One I've found among Evangelical Christians of many flavours is the one I like to call, with apologies to John Calvin, "the inevitable perseverance of the just". See, if you liked the Axiom of Choice, I've got...

Re: What exactly Is Wrong with Polygamy anyway?

If you want to talk on Mormon Discussions about a modern form of polygamy that has nothing to do with anything Mormon, then you're going to have to be a lot clearer about that distinction. Historical Mormon polygamy really existed so there is a lot to say about it, and a lot of people here know usef...

Re: The Bad Idea that Took Over the World

That ^. For practical tasks a well-made how-to video can be great, because seeing the faucet you’re trying to repair, or whatever, really helps. For abstract ideas, though, it’s really hard to make a video in which the sound and visual are pulling informational weight. Too often the video medium is ...

Re: The End of the World is Just the Beginning - Peter Zeihan

I doubt I'll have time to read this but it sure sounds sketchy. Predicting catastrophe because of falling birth rates seems like observing a driver traveling at 60 miles an hour on the freeway, noticing that at this point they're getting close to home, and predicting that they will surely crash into...

Re: What exactly Is Wrong with Polygamy anyway?

Then, Physics Guy, do you take issue with the Gospel Topics essay on polygamy on the LDS website that says when the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints practiced polygamy virtually everyone (including the male members) who wanted to be married were married? Who in 19th century Utah wanted t...

Re: The axiom of choice

The lowest marketable food grade in Canada is "Canada Standard", but you hardly ever see it, and for many kinds of products it isn't even allowed to be sold for human consumption. Apple sauce, for instance, only comes in Fancy and Choice grades, and the step down from Fancy to Choice appears signifi...

The axiom of choice

I’m afraid this thread title is just clickbait for math nerds. All I really want to ask is about the seemingly common Mormon choice to use the word “choice”, as an adjective meaning “especially good”. To my ear the word is quaint and archaic. It’s also a bit weak, perhaps just because the only other...
