Re: A devious manipulator?

Thank you for sharing. I was mostly curious about how he went about signaling sincerity and how you found out he was a narcissist, which you answered. I've had a few brushes with pathological thieves and liars over the years, but I don't have much firsthand experience with full-blown narcissists, th...

Re: A devious manipulator?

Anyone who has had a close relationship with a manipulative narcissist knows that this argument is total b***s***. I had the pleasure of having one as a mission companion. He passed all of the same tests that DCP outlines for Joseph Smith here and yet he was still a devious manipulator and a sadist...

Re: Don Bradley: The Man, The Legend

Don's a busy guy, and he often commits to things he doesn't really have time for.

I understand the feeling. I do the same thing. I recently backed out of presenting at an upcoming conference, because I realized I need to stay focused on my dissertation right now.

Re: Dan Vogel not a serious Historian?

Dan Vogel draws large, enthusiastic audiences at the conferences where serious historians of Mormonism congregate. I can only conclude that Dan Peterson has a definition of "serious historian" that I and most of my colleagues wouldn't recognize.

Re: financial motivations of Joseph Smith

I don't have my notes with me, but I believe the number of Book of Mormon copies printed was 5k, not 3k. There are also a few sources that say Joseph initially set a higher price for the Book of Mormon and then lowered it, though I'm not sure whether those claims are accurate. I'll chime in with som...

Re: "The Clash of Differing Opinions"

You know what? You're right. I exaggerated what you said, and in so doing I contributed to the problem Don identified in his OP. You didn't say you think non-Mormons are evil; you said you think anti-Mormonism is evil and you condemn the people who engage in it. Fair enough. Reading your comment mad...

Re: "The Clash of Differing Opinions"

True; Don does not subscribe to the radical Islamist notion that his group is good and everyone else is evil.

But neither do most FAIR writers, some of whom I'm quite fond of. Their writings may be mostly misguided, but I try to love the sinner despite the sin.
