Did any of you chaps know Dr Midgley at BYU?
From what I can tell, his modus operandi seems to be to deliberately seek out conflict for entertainment.

Re: More on Brother Joseph and ancient documents
There's another piece of evidence which suggests that the Greek content of Nephite culture has been deiberately suppressed in the Book of Mormon. Prof. Charles Anthon certified that the gold plates contained "Egyptian, Chaldaic, Assyriac, and Arabic" characters. This is no doubt because th...

Re: More on Brother Joseph and ancient documents
It is certainly possible, but as to the -ā (long alpha), that is the Doric (and actually every other dialect but Attic-Ionic) equivalent to Attic-Ionic -ēs (e.g. Doric Archi dāmos vs. Attic dēmos , and Doric names ending in -ās have -ēs in Attic-Ionic) Ah yes, my mistake, I was treating it as if it...

This chap sounds uncomfortably like Mr Trump.
I gave up before getting to the end of his account, but if he is looking for an academic career, he will find that cultivating a sense of self-irony and perspective will serve him well.

Re: The Hot Air of Windbag Louis Midgley
Midgley is using the passive-aggressive internet tactic of dialoguing with gemli in the third person. That's strike one, right there. Strike two is the rhetorical reference to Dostoevsky (come on , old chap). I stopped reading at the toilet paper metaphor. I don't think I like gemli as a commenter. ...

Re: More on Brother Joseph and ancient documents
Outstanding! This is what it must have felt like to be in the Kirtland Temple in April 1836. The Lehites as the founders of the Elephantine settlement - it seems so obvious when you point it out. The presence of the extraterritorial temple there is the giveaway. Just one tiny point. Forgive me as a ...

Re: More on Brother Joseph and ancient documents
I would like to thank Prof. Johannes for really moving the ball forward in Mormon Johannine and Book of Abraham Studies. It is not often that one person can accomplish such feats of scholarship in a single thread. My worry is that in the flotsam and jetsam of MormonDiscussions.com discussion such c...

Re: A Divine Origin of the Columbia Chess Chronicle, 1888
Very interesting, Lemmie. Thanks for the information. THis bit genuinely surprised me: Unfortunately, DCP also published in the same blog entry his own first hand account of Skousen talking about it, obviating his efforts to move responsibility away from Skousen pretty solidly: I think I may, in a f...

Re: Symmachus Demonstrates John Gee Has Unsound Arguments
Well played, Symmachus.
I've tried to start the ball rolling with some ideas about the ancient redaction history of the Book of Abraham:

Re: More on Brother Joseph and ancient documents
Following on from the discussion of Dr Gee's ideas about the Book of Abraham ( http://mormondiscussions.com/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=49621 ), I have some thoughts of my own to offer on this unique piece of latter-day scripture. My point of departure is this comment by Symmachus: ....there is n...
