Re: Official Homosexuality Thread for the Celestial Forum

These barbaric laws are in the same category with burning for witchcraft. In 1895 England Wilde was at least not castrated, and he wasn't punished any worse than people were for various other crimes, but his punishment was pretty bad. He was confined, and addressed by a number, and had to do hard ph...

Re: Official Homosexuality Thread for the Celestial Forum

The lecturer on aesthetics to whom Cannon referred in your post above, who went to prison for formerly capital crimes with members of the nobility, was surely Oscar Wilde. Wilde served two years of pretty hard time and was released but he did not simply rebound into society; he left the United Kingd...

Re: An exotic new argument for eye-witness testimony

I've always been surprised at the two Witness Testimonies being so prominently published because they really seem more damaging than supportive. First of all the Testimony of Three Witnesses is all about an angel and the voice of God. It goes out of its way to say that the plates were shown to the w...

Re: #GiveThanks for Mopologetics: DCP Ridicules Others' "Silly" Beliefs

Peterson is making a plug for Intelligent Design. He's representing this mysterious monolith as a clear analog of that good old pocket watch that you find on a moor and from which you infer a watchmaker. The monolith has been recognised by everyone as an artificial product even though nobody knows w...

Re: Carmack/Skousen: "Virtually none of the grammatical variants listed in section 4-archaic grammar are archaic."

I have the same sense of the difference between “assign” and “consign”, and find the substitution of “assigned” for “consigned” in this passage to be no help at all in salvaging a sensible sentence out of the mess Smith made by not saying “resigned”. As Lem noted, “assigned that” makes even less sen...

What are the various Lucky Charm marshmallow shapes supposed to represent? I interpret the caractors this way, from left to right: Fish?? Shooting star Heart Rainbow Moon Hourglass Horseshoe Leprechaun hat, with shamrock embossed on crown instead of sticking up from ribband The hourglass seems prett...

Re: Carmack/Skousen: "Virtually none of the grammatical variants listed in section 4-archaic grammar are archaic."

What looks like low-level modern usage of the archaic phrase is, in very large part, just noise emanating from reprinted language [emphasis added]. If we're trying to decide whether a certain phrase was colloquial in a certain place and time, then Carmack's point here seems legitimate. Some phrases...

So for the whole Early Modern English thing it now sounds like what the particle physicists say about an interesting anomaly that dissolves under more careful analysis: “It went away.”

Re: A Special Video Message of Hope and Healing Is Coming From the Prophet November 20

Would Ratzinger pay 10% of his income to have a random guy warning him against his sins? He swore an oath of poverty to do so. I don’t believe he did. He’s a secular priest—a plain vanilla priest not belonging to any religious order. Before they made him a bishop he was a professor in Germany for m...
