Re: Interpreter 2.0?

Doctor Steuss is persuasive, as usual. I withdraw my objections to the logo.

Responses to Tim Griffy

I've been having trouble with Disqus posting replies to Tim's Blogger blog, and it's getting frustrating. I think the problem is probably that Disqus is unhappy with my iCloud proxy e-mail. I'm not worried about anyone finding out my real-life identity—as a German professor my freedom to hold whatev...

Re: Gemli explains...

I think this is an important point, though elusive enough that we may all be groping a bit to address it. One thing I want to try to say is that to some extent everything is what Gadianton calls "narrative". People who think that they have the cold, hard facts that don't require any story to make th...

Re: Interpreter 2.0?

I don't think it's a bad logo. It's an open book, but it also looks like multiple paths with a nice little doorway as the right path through them, or opening up into all of them, or something. My only problem is that being all bent around backwards like that is going to be awfully bad for that book'...

Re: Your Ego May Be F****** up your Perception

I'd call that progress! Medicine names are usually so opaque. I still remember the Rogaine commercials from the 1990s that urged you to "ask your doctor if Rogaine is right for you" but gave me at least no idea at all of what condition the product was supposed to treat.

Re: I Can't Eye-Roll Hard Enough Over DCP's Latest

Götterdämmerung, a snifter of orange soda, and a hearty pastrami sandwich Am I right that the soda and sandwich are to be consumed while listening to Wagner, or is Götterdämmerung a Mormon delicacy like funeral potatoes and lime jello? (I may just be confused by the fact that the possibly ironical ...

Re: Ideology, Religion, and Mormonism

I was thinking more about the relationship between religion and politics in fascism, which is shaped by the myth of the nation state. I had not really considered that BY’s Zion may or may not fit in such a conversation. My guess is that pre-modern empires do not, but I am open to correction. For wh...

Re: Your Ego May Be F****** up your Perception

It's hard to see what Fahrvergnügen or Fahrvergnuegen (if you can't find an "ü" you can always write it as "ue") has to do with perception: it means "the enjoyment of driving". It was apparently popularised in English by Volkswagen in some commercials that ran in the 1990s, though I don't remember s...

Re: The fried egg.

Maybe it's a big fried egg, from a big chicken, fried in a big pan? I'm trying to stop overthinking things and I feel that this is a good start.
