Re: “Folk” magic redefined by Brant Gardner and Mike Reed
For all the silliness in this thread, I find a lot of it rather fascinating and informative.

Re: “Folk” magic redefined by Brant Gardner and Mike Reed
Bumping this... (you're welcome!) What is interesting is that the Mormons themselves (in the 1840's when Smith was still alive) were calling what some were doing with peepstones (telling fortunes, etc, like the Smith's did in Palmyra) "black magic", and claiming that anyone who had the &qu...

Re: Apostasy is worse than murder!
Yeah FF, I have the minutes of the "School of the Prophets' under John Taylor (easy to acquire) where they debated letting young people get their endowments because they might then apostatize and they actually went through the penalties and discussed them. They were proposing all kinds of thing...

Re: Apologetics and Vern Holley Maps
I know where the girl was describing to Partridge and I'm going to go there in the Spring. And dig around a little. I'm also going to make a trip down to Evans in the Spring and do a little searching. I'll let you know if I find anything interesting...

Re: Apologetics and Vern Holley Maps
I don't think it's "mean" Lemmie. I mean, they could go to a place just outside of Buffalo, NY and read this very real diary entry of Bishop Edward Partridge from 1835: Dec. 27th – Sunday – in the afternoon, I spoke at Kirtland in the afternoon after H. Smith. In the evening between 8 and ...

Re: Apostasy is worse than murder!
How is apostasy worse than murder in Mormonism? The "prophets" in Utah Territory went to great lengths to show us that it was. Breaking "Temple Covenants" (by any Elder) was to them... a dire thing. I do believe that the penalty for that was disembowelment...or having your throat...

Re: Apologetics and Vern Holley Maps
There is an argument (weak as usual) that some names shouldn't be there because they came along later... but did they? That's the thing, I don't think that Holley or the Mopologists really dug into the local histories. Let me explain. There is a name in the Book of Mormon, "Angola" a place...

Re: Caractors Document vs. Anthon Transcript
Hello Jfro, I did a whole series of articles on this in 2012 when I discovered a photo taken by Jacob Hicks of the "Caractors" document in the 1860's that included the torn off bottom of the page it was on... Soon after I discovered the photo at the Clay County Museum web site, some others...

Re: The Best of the 2010s: A Mopologetic Decade in Review
What about the Anonymous Church Essays in response to the CES Letter? They employed about every Mopologist in the Church to contribute to them. They have had a huge impact on the Church and critics. Overall, an interesting and informative read. Thank you, Scratch.
