Re: Lars Nielsen's "How the Book of Mormon Came to Pass"

In my experience, Hales is a frustrating interlocutor. I am sure he means well, and he is not a bad guy, but his tactics are pretty slippery. He straw mans his opponents, and his own arguments are recycled. His Joseph couldn’t have done this ergo God arguments are his usual go-to approach. My probl...

Re: Seeing Things Differently -DanP the apologist excuse.

You don’t have the free will to have written this any other way. Your brain didn’t just travel the path of least resistance- it traveled the only path it could have. There was no point in time when you could have written this differently, because then you would have written it differently. If you d...

Re: Seeing Things Differently -DanP the apologist excuse.

Some people are more malleable than others because they seem to be predisposed to letting their minds travel the path of least resistance. We’re all prone to that. But after all is said and done we are responsible for our own decisions even as we receive constant input and influences from the outsi...

Re: Seeing Things Differently -DanP the apologist excuse.

We’re both in the same room. But that seems to be about as far as it goes. Not at all. The idea is that we each enter the room with our own biases that influence our perceptions, but that these biases and perceptions can change as we're willing to empathize and interact with each other. Sometimes s...

My comments regarding a closed system refer to my references to solipsism.
I'm guessing that you really understand neither concept.

Again, I’m not directly correlating the two. They stand apart from each other. One is inside the other but the other exists independently
Make your argument…

I'm sure that you'll agree that even a cursory reading reveals that David Brooks is suggesting that perception is not a closed system.

Re: Seeing Things Differently -DanP the apologist excuse.

MG, where do you get this "we all live in a closed system" stuff? What does it even mean? I'm having a difficult time following you. Edit: Earlier, however, I mentioned that we live within a closed system of perceived reality. And that’s as good as it’s gonna’ get. How the hell is our perception of...

Re: Lars Nielsen's "How the Book of Mormon Came to Pass"

I view all these “isms” as tools or lenses to aid understanding. But they don’t do that if one mixes and matches them in an ad hoc manner in a way that reaches a desired outcome. I think that’s what you are doing when you posit “spiritual truth” as something other than socially constructed reality....

Re: Lars Nielsen's "How the Book of Mormon Came to Pass"

I do not agree with the splitting up of what I believed to be an on topic conversation. It’s been taken apart and dismantled so as to disrupt the flow of discussion. I don’t know if this is a recent moderator tactic to derail a discussion or a decision you made with full integrity and fairness. As ...
