There is no evidence linking the Americas (or any other land) to the Book of Mormon. None. Any attempts to do so have been the same as trying to prove the Hobbit actually occurred in New Zealand.

I think the bigger issue is why are they building these Temples when the membership is in decline.

I lived in both states for extended periods of time. For me the differences seemed to be more of Utah vs California state thing more than anything. Then there is the largest single group of Mormons. These are people who have no idea they are considered members by the church. The 100+ people I baptized on my mission decades ago are mostly in that group.
