Some have speculated that Joe may have made some plates out of tin. But it would have been relatively easy to make "golden" looking plates from copper plates treated with zinc sulphate, water, and a little heat. The technique has been known for many centuries. Oliver Crowdery was a trained blacksmith and would have plausibly known about the technique. Nevertheless, the technique was common knowledge.
