I wrote this article a while back on the history of the Lodges in Nauvoo, their respective suspensions, and their later respective statuses as clandestine Lodges.

But I did not focus all that much on Bennett or on Joseph Smith.
"… Behold, we will end the conflict."
—Captain Moroni (Alma 44:10)

Whatever conflicts that you come across in life, they can be beaten. Adopt Captain Moroni's attitude: be of the disposition to end the conflict, and then act on that disposition.

Bennett was initially proposed as secretary of Nauvoo Lodge. After his ouster, he spilled the beans on some of the irregularities of Nauvoo Lodge. I initially was prejudiced against him, but after research, it turned out that he was giving accurate reports.

Bennett was probably upset and jealous that he didn't come up with the idea first of what Joseph was doing.
