What year did this line of Patriarchs depart from Adam-ondi-Ahman in Missouri and arrive in the Middle East?

Year 0 Adam begins to reign as lord of the earth
Year 130 Adam age 130 begat Seth
Year 235 Seth age 105 begat Enos
Year 325 Enos age 90 begat Cainan
Year 395 Cainan age 70 begat Mahalaleel
Year 460 Mahalaleel age 65 begat Jared
Year 622 Jared age 162 begat Enoch
Year 687 Enoch age 65 begat Methuselah
Year 874 Methuselah age 187 begat Lamech
Year 1056 Lamech age 182 begat Noah
Year 1656 Noah was six hundred years old when the flood of waters was upon the earth

Geneses 7:11,12 wrote:In the six hundredth year of Noah’s life, in the second month, the seventeenth day of the month, the same day were all the fountains of the great deep broken up, and the windows of heaven were opened. And the rain was upon the earth forty days and forty nights.
Geneses 8:3,4 wrote:And the waters returned from off the earth continually: and after the end of the hundred and fifty days the waters were abated. And the ark rested in the seventh month, on the seventeenth day of the month, upon the mountains of Ararat.

It’s perfectly safe to say that Noah landed in the Middle East in the year 1,657 wherein Noah and all the animals climbed down the mountain to begin carefully guided lives. Do you suppose that the penguins were dropped off earlier at some island prior to sailing over Turkey?

Re: Methuselah

Post by Shulem »

Now to turn our attention to Methuselah in the Book of Moses manuscript. Two MARKERS are attributed to him located at the lower portion of the page. The numbers are easily discernable atop heavily strikethrough text:

Old Testament Revision 1

Old Testament Revision 1 wrote:and it came to pass that Methuselah lived an hundred eighty and seven years 218 years and begat Lamech and Methuselah lived after he begat Lamech seven Hundred eighty and two years and begat sons and daughters and all the days of Methuselah were were nine Hundred Sixty and nine years 1000 and he died

Both MARKERS are set as follows:

218 - 187 = 31
1000 - 969 = 31

Smith didn’t employ these MARKERS for Methuselah’s priesthood ordination age in D&C 107:50. Had he done so the age would have been 31 when he was ordained rather than one hundred years old when he was ordained under the hand of Adam.”

So, how do we get from 31 to 100? Only Joseph Smith can effectively answer that question but at some point and for some reason he elected to yet again disregard the notations given in the manuscript and crown him at the prestigious age of 100 for his ordination. The fatherly age of 100 calls to mind the post-flood centenarian Abraham who begat Isaac when he was 100 years old. Not many fathers bear a son at age 100 or are ordained Patriarchs at that grand age! Perhaps that helped factor a change from 31 to 100. Who can say? Another important mark in time that references a 100 year anniversary being linked to priesthood ordinations is in the Book of Mormon:

4 Nephi 1:14 wrote:. . . yea, even an hundred years had passed away, and the disciples of Jesus, whom he had chosen, had all gone to the paradise of God, save it were the three who should tarry; and there were other disciples ordained in their stead;

Lamech

Post by Shulem »

We learned earlier that poor Mahalaleel was held back in the line of lineal succession and ordained AFTER his son, grandson and great-grandson were ordained, hence the great-grandfather was last in line to be ordained! We explored the idea that Mahalaleel was definitely not up to speed and maybe had some kind of worthiness issue known only to Joseph Smith and perhaps that is why he was seemingly barred from the Patriarchal Order until so late in life. Who can say what Smith was thinking? I’ve also shown contradicting dates of when Enoch was translated and how Smith ignored and changed his own revelations with regard to the MARKERS that he set in place.

But what I did not mention earlier is that time was really catching up for Mahalaleel whereby 17 years prior to his own late ordination there was another patriarchal son born in the line of chosen succession, Lamech. Poor Mahalaleel had long been procrastinating the days of his repentance and if he failed to get his act together soon, he would see his own GREAT-GREAT-GRANDSON (Lamech) ordained as a Patriarch passing him up along with Jared, Enoch, and Methuselah. Perhaps the humiliation was too much for Mahalaleel to bear so he quickly repented of whatever it was he was guilty of and appealed to Adam who was about to die, he having only 39 years left to live. Whatever the reason, Joseph Smith did not say.

As it turned out, Lamech was ordained just 15 years after his great-great-grandfather Mahalaleel was finally ordained. Lamech was ordained at the age of 32, but not by the hand of Adam who had only 24 years left to live. According to D&C 107:51, Lamech was ordained by Seth. There are no MARKERS in the manuscript for Lamech who assumed almost the exact age (31) set by the MARKERS for his father’s ordination. So, Lamech now became the second youngest Patriarch (after Enoch) in the chosen lineage to be ordained to that office. Curious how Adam did not ordain Lamech but for whatever reason his son Seth was given that honor. In just 21 years from that time, Adam would find himself busy conducting family affairs for the last time in Adam-ondi-Ahman.

Noah

Post by Shulem »

Now, we finally reach the breaking point concerning the patriarchal priesthood ordinations of the chosen lineage and the ages Smith assigned to those ordinations. We only need turn to D&C 107:52 and discover that “Noah was ten years old when he was ordained under the hand of Methuselah” and we are left to wonder if it’s a typo or a joke. Ten years old? We will cover that in detail later. But first, why Methuselah?

Why on earth was Noah ordained by Methuselah, his grandfather? Would it not make better sense if Noah’s father Lamech had ordained him? It makes absolutely zero sense that a 10-year-old boy was ordained by his grandfather rather than his own father! Something is just not right. Obviously, Adam and Seth couldn’t have performed the ordination because they had previously passed and Enoch was translated but why on earth did Joseph Smith assign Methuselah? It makes absolutely no sense at all!

When Noah was ordained, Enos the 3rd Patriarch, was still alive and lived for another 74 years. Why didn’t Enos ordain Noah? Come to think of it, Cainian, Mahalaleel, and Jared were also alive. But most important, Noah’s direct Patriarch, his own father LAMECH was alive and lived for another 585 years before passing away just 5 years before the flood.

Joseph Smith’s story of Methuselah ordaining Noah is simply out of order and unacceptable. It takes things to the breaking point when asked to believe that the grandfather takes precedence over the father. Surely, 10 year old Noah would have wanted his own father to ordain him to the office of Patriarch, moreover, surely father Lamech would have wanted to ordain his own son.

This is certainly the point in the story when we can understand and fully conceive that Joseph Smith blew it.

Most likely Lamech had his white jumpsuit ready and was looking forward to this event. Probably had one of those singers Jersey Girl likes waiting to play at the Patriarch party afterward.

Jumpsuit or no jumpsuit, Methuselah was out of line and had no business ordaining Noah to the introduction of Priesthood whereby the FATHER (Lamech) had that right and privilege of ordaining his own son. Smith’s doctrinal statement with regard to ordination and succession makes it crystal clear that the father is to perform the ordinance. The narrative leads us to believe that Smith implied that Noah received both the Priesthood after the Order of the Son of God as well as the office of Patriarch at the hand of Methuselah. Thus, Noah became the next evangelist in the family line. But Methuselah had no business ordaining the boy to the priesthood. It’s out of line and out of order! If anything, the boy would have been ordained to the priesthood by his father and the leading Patriarch of the day was Enos who would preside over the chosen lineage and ordain him to the office of Patriarch. The doctrine clearly states the father has the right to ordain the son to the priesthood.

“The order of this priesthood was confirmed to be handed down from father to son, and rightly belongs to the literal descendants of the chosen seed, to whom the promises were made.”

This particular order was also expressed in the teachings of the prophet whereby Lamech had the right to ordain his son:

“Lamech See Genesis 5th. ch 28 and 29 v. and Lamech lived 182 years and begat a Son and he called his name Noah, saying this same shall comfort us concerning our work and the toil of our hands because of the ground which the Lord has curst— The Priesthood continued from Lamech to Noah Genesis vi. 13.”

Therefore, I conclude that Smith was confused and mistakenly attributed Methuselah as the one who ordained Noah in the D&C account. I have demonstrated that things are out of order and Smith has contradicted himself in his own revelations.

There was an incredible selection of animals living in Missouri before the flood. Kangaroos, polar bears, penguins, pandas, lions, tigers, koalas, skeevers, ostriches, yaks, llamas, elephants, hyenas, unicorns, and a hundred thousand other species. How was the ark able to drop them off in various parts of the world?

I’m afraid the Bible is silent about that. Apparently “Noah removed the covering of the ark, and looked, and, behold, the face of the ground was dry” and from there the animals disembarked and went their way whereby “every beast, every creeping thing, and every fowl, and whatsoever creepeth upon the earth, after their kinds, went forth out of the ark”

No doubt Noah and his family were very hungry, they were NOT vegans! The animals were on the menu for the LORD himself said “Every moving thing that liveth shall be meat for you.” Also, the LORD straightway commanded that animal sacrifice resume and thus “Noah builded an altar unto the Lord; and took of every clean beast, and of every clean fowl, and offered burnt offerings on the altar” and the Lord smelled a sweet savour once again.

I’m afraid that good Christians and good Jews everywhere are going to have to accept the fact that the story of Noah is a pure work of fiction, a childlike story told by ancient religionists in order to explain primitive ideas on how the earth came to be. The story of Noah, the ark, and all the animals is nothing more than a story made up by people who had a primitive understanding of earth and science. IT DID NOT HAPPEN! I so testify of that!

And with that, I can assure you that Noah was not ordained to the priesthood when 10 years old. I will be discussing that matter soon enough.

Doesn't that throw a wrench in the entire Mormon story, unless as Sledge proposes, it is all fiction?

Re: Joseph Smith was confused

Post by Shulem »

It certainly seems that Joseph Smith at times was confused and lost track of things while discussing chronology in his teachings. An example of this is in a discourse the prophet gave with Instruction on Priesthood, 1840. First, Smith discusses the mission of Enoch and doctrine of translation saying, “the doctrine of translation is a power which belongs to this Priesthood.” Within these very teachings Smith contradicts his D&C 107 (430 year) revelation and says, “And Enoch walked with God after he begat Methuselah 300 years, and begat sons and daughters, and all the days of Enoch were 365 years; and Enoch walked with God,and he was not, for God took him.”

Smith goes on to extoll the virtues and powers of Enoch and how he was “reserved also unto the presidency of a dispensation” and correctly recognized Enoch as the 7th from Adam. But then something dramatic happens when he shifts down the lineage from Enoch to Noah.

Joseph Smith wrote:The next great, grand Patriarch who held the keys of the Priesthood was Lamech. ‘And Lamech lived one hundred and eighty-two years and begat a son, and he called his name Noah’

See also Teachings of the Prophet Joseph Smith, p. 171 “The next great, grand Patriarch [after Enoch] who held the keys of the Priesthood was Lamech.”

Wait just a second! Notice in the discourse that Smith goes straight from Enoch to Noah via Lamech with no mention of Methuselah! Smith inadvertently skipped Methuselah who supposedly was the very person to have ordained Noah according to the revelation of D&C 107! This was an incredible blunder on Smith’s part in showing that he contradicts his other revelations which attest that Methuselah ordained Noah. The following statement made by Smith in this discourse is *proof* that Smith was confused and carelessly skipping patriarchs while pretending to know so much about them:

Joseph Smith wrote:The Priesthood continued from Lamech to Noah

According to D&C 107 the priesthood continued from Methuselah to Noah and it certainly appears that Smith has lost his notes and has forgotten the revealed line of succession as recorded in the Doctrine and Covenants. So which of the two is false doctrine? Both! Joseph Smith made things up as he went along and things didn’t always agree. So when Smith speaks of Enoch and his ministry and then in his next breath says, “The next great, grand Patriarch who held the keys of the Priesthood was Lamech”, you can be sure that Smith was confused about the line of succession (from father to son), and failed to remember the revelations he gave to his church. He failed to keep his story straight.
