I suspect there are multi-causations for cancer, and the will of God is not among them. Best look to physiological malfunctions. The good in religion is for solace, not recriminations.

But You are missing the point. If God can control illness why must he give it to people? Why did god create HIV/AIDS? Herpes? Mental retardation?

If god is so great he would, in his omnipresent all knowing all influencing ways, be inclined to reduce suffering as much as possible.

If god exists hes an asshole.

It's hard for me to get out of my mindset, and be able to ask if hearing that God wanted to send a message to your still living son would help. I think it would enrage me. Of course I don't know if people are saying this to the parents, or just to each other.

People are justy trying to obtain some comfort and make sense out of the things that we really have no answers for. God's will? God needed them? Maybe there is no God. I know for those who believe they may say that God takes the eternal view and even though we may have pain losing a loved one it is but a brief moment. For those without an eternal view it does make a God seem pretty monstrous or selfish. Also believers will say God never promised a life free of pain and grief. For Christians they will say this is part of being in a fallen world and living in sin apart from a Holy, Just and Perfect God.

For non believers the arguments can seem silly. For doubters as well. For me these things challenge my belief in God quite a bit.

But I just settle for the answer that life is incredibly hard and sad and full of ugly awful things. It is also full of lovely wonderful things. And it is full of many mundane boring things. When tragedy happens I just view it as part of life. Thus I try to relish each moment and live to it fullest best I can and not worry about it all.

But it seems as humans have a need to explain death in particular and what lies beyond it.
