So it was some involvement between Joseph and Marinda Hyde, in her pre-married state, that got Joseph tarred and feathered?

The accusation was that young Marinda's brother instigated the mob because he thought Joseph had been involved with his sister while Joseph and Emma were living with Marinda's parents. Her brother was part of the mob. The further rumor was that Orson Hyde later divorced Marinda when Brigham Young chided him about these dalliances years later. For whatever reason, they did divorce.

Both Compton and Bushman discount the story of Marinda's brothers instigating the mob (it's from a secondhand source, and some of the details don't add up). According to Compton, Marinda divorced Orson because Orson had pretty much ignored her for many years in favor of his younger wives.

there is a happy middle. After Joseph's death everyone had to go to the new temple to have the sealings done over - I guess the true and proper way. Marinda chose Orson over Joseph and was sealed to him in the Nauvoo temple. I think they were divorced in the 1850's but when given the choice of Joseph or Orson - Marinda chose Orson when he was there - before the first wedding she chose Orson and after Joseph's death she chose Orson.
