Scottie wrote:Utah businesses lacking in health care coverageUtah is the leader in yet another category, but it's not one to be proud of. Employers in Utah are dropping their employees' health care benefits faster than any other state in the country, and it is having an effect on Utah families.
"Working families are being asked to pay so much more of the premium that they choose to go without. So, that's just really, deeply tragic," said Judi Hilman, of the Utah Health Policy Project.
Hilman says that a lot of it comes from the number of small businesses in Utah. But there is a solution. "Get involved in advocacy," she said.
Not sure what this says about Mormonism, but I'm sure it's bad somehow...
I was under the impression that businesses, including those in Utah, tend to make business decisions based on economic/financial prinicples rather than religious principles (is there a religious principle about businesses providing health care?). Am I wrong about that?
If not, then I am not sure how Hillman's brief quip could say anything at all about Mormonism, let alone bad. But, perhaps you could explain.
Incidentally, the cryptic article did profer at least some viable explanation for why Utah may be leading other states in this decline--i.e. because of the large number of small businesses (which tend to have more difficulting affording health care for their employees, assuming they have any employees.)
I think if one were to also look more carefully at the types of business, they would also find lots of sevice type companies that employ a number of entry-level personnel, whose revenue-generating capacity barely covers the minimum wage, let alone the high expence of health care coverage.
Anyway, I am not sure why Hillman and others are shouldering businesses (or even the government for that matter) with health coverage for families. To me, that is the responsibility of the parents. And, I suspect that were businesses and governments less inclined to involve themselves in that private matter, parents would be better able to afford it if they choose (that is the way it was when I was growing up).
But, I suppose that if someone is looking for a way to stretch most any seemingly unfavorable report into a slight against the Church, then this cryptical article may work as well as any. ;-)
