Is it in our genes?

Post by _karl61 »

From a news story: I guess this prophet thing and the end of the world has been going on for thousands of years and will continue for thousands more.

"Kuznetsov has been charged with setting up a religious organization associated with violence. Earlier this week, officials said they had seized literature that included what appeared to be extremist rhetoric. He has been confined to a psychiatric hospital since November.

An engineer from a devout family, Kuznetsov, who goes by the title of Father Pyotr, declared himself a prophet several years ago. He left his family and established the True Russian Orthodox Church and recruited followers in Russia and Belarus."

It's articles like this that should stand out, in a very significant, for Mormons. It did for me. This kind of reality check was just one more item that would strain the mental shelving for me. I realized that Joseph Smith was no different from this gentleman, in a basic con man sort of way, and extending that line of reasoning back in time it was apparent to me that every_single_religion possessed similar cults of personality, credulous devotees, and men who had special access to special knowledge that no one else seemed to have (well, at least until a successor had to rise up).

Mormonsim. Seventh Day Adventism. Islam. Christianity. Judaism. Hinduism. Buddhism. Etc... All sprung from the mind of a man, foisted upon the masses, consumed and promoted by the faithful, legitimized by most as reasonable ideologies that help humans navigate this world in a meaningful way.

A lie promoted as truth accepted as legitimate. Of course it's in our nature. It's in our nature to deceive and be deceived. It's how get things done.
You can’t trust adults to tell you the truth.
