One thing I noticed about both interviews I saw is that the women never directly answered the question "are 14 year old girls being married to older men"? In the first interview I saw, the women responded by saying "this isn't about that, this is about the children". In this interview, the women responded "it isn't a compound, it's a ranch, our home". Both interviewers let it go after that. I wish the interviewers would have pressed it. Perhaps they knew if they pressed it, the women would have walked out. But the one conclusion I'm drawing is that the answer is yes, 14 year old girls are being married off to older men.

Just from the sound of it, my guess is that they are passive enough to go along with whatever the menfolk desire.

It reminds me of a more recent time in Mormon history, when the women obediently opposed the ERA and attended that women's conference. I even heard they were "directed" by men who accompanied them. Maybe Harmony can verify that.

At first, I thought that was what they were saying too, but then I realized they meant that the children were taken to a compound, when they where taken away from their ranch. They were being consistent.

You can really tell how isolated they are, though, with their speech. It is downright creepy. It is like a mutation of the old Utah accent (which is not nearly as strong now as it was 20 years ago).

I think it's taken to be a visible signifier of "sweetness." You know, "Keep Sweet:" demure, shy, innocent, always smiling, eyes downcast, voice soft and "musical." And, maybe above all, childlike.
