I pity the poor kid. He will never be able to do want he wants UNLESS he either exits the church or serves a mission. If he does not serve a mission, and remains a member, no amount of success in the music industry will subdue the scorn of the membership.
As has already been pointed out earlier in the thread, take a look at the Osmonds. They were actually "pardoned" from serving missions by Church leaders. Their music career was considered their mission.
Who is to say that the same thing wouldn't happen to Archuleta if his success continues?
I think the mission "pardon" for the Osmonds would have to do with the amount of tithing they paid.
