Think of the Children!

Post by _asbestosman »

When is it a legitimate concern, and when is it more of an excuse or an overhyped worry?

Possible topics to contrast and maybe compare:

Dartagnan's concerns about gay adoption because of how the children will be made fun of for having gay parents.
(Alleged) Satanic Ritual Abuse.
Present concerns about the safety of the FLDS children.
Utah's fight against the Dead Goat Saloon a few years ago.
The removal of merry-go-rounds and other such playground equipment from many parks and playgrounds.

Note: I am not saying that we should not be concerned about children. This thread is not about CPS. This thread is about how to tell when concern is proper when it's overblown, and when it's somewhere in between.

In your own opinion, what on your list above is NOT a proper concern for children? I'm just trying to get a handle on where you're at before I comment further.

I don't really want my opinion to influence the responses.

Anything can be a proper concern for children. However, sometimes I think the cure or protection can be worse than the worry.

Okay, I'll try to go with what you listed.

Dartagnan's concerns about gay adoption because of how the children will be made fun of for having gay parents.

That's a valid concern. Parents and school rules can help curb it.

(Alleged) Satanic Ritual Abuse.

I don't know what that's about. I don't want to know what it's about.

Present concerns about the safety of the FLDS children.

Valid concern. It's being addressed.

Utah's fight against the Dead Goat Saloon a few years ago.

Don't know what that is.

The removal of merry-go-rounds and other such playground equipment from many parks and playgrounds.

I think you're talking about the kinds of merry go rounds that children have broken their necks on and such. They shouldn't be permitted on pulic play grounds because parents so often don't monitor their children properly on them. Don't get me started on playground issues or loss of natural play spaces for children and why that's detrimental to a child's development.

I think folks should focus on urgency and what presents imminent danger to children on this thread.

Abman was referring to the hysteria, in predominantly the 80's, concerning Satanic worship. There were day care centers that were supposedly involved and individuals were tried through the court of public opinion -- and later courts of law! It was hyped by the media and a great number of our citizens were terrified that there were Satanic cults hurting children, puppies and babies! There was terror that mass Satanic orgies were the norm.....
