This is not so hypothetical.

In the XVI-XVIII century, christian captives of muslims had this type of alternative. Death - or accepting the Only True Faith. They didn't escape from slavery but saved their life.

For them, the situation was never over.
Today, we call them renegades. Then, it was the only way to survive the situation.

Say you and your family of seven (wife, six kids) were eating a nice meal together at The Viilage Inn and a psychotic Evangelical with a 38 in his hand grabbed you and put a gun to your head and said "proclaim now that Joseph Smith was a false prophet or die" -- what would you do? Proclaim or not proclaim?

(Assume for purposes of this hypothetical that you would indeed be shot and killed unless you proclaimed as much.)

And yet a so-called "Prophet of God" named Abinadi was burned to death with faggots while the King asked him repeatedly to deny his faith.

And you wouldn't feel the need to repent?

What, hard core BCspace doesn't want to die the ultimate Mormon death?

You're talking about a straight ticket to three wives and dozens of black servants in the Celestial Kingdom!

You plan to be useless to God in the afterlife? Eternity is a long time to be useless. I thought heaven would be meaningful.

If I have to do crap, it won't be much of a heaven. I enjoy being lazy.

I'd pass on Exaltation then. It sounds like a lot of work.

I remember reading that after Parley Pratt escaped from prison, he was being hunted and had to get out of Missouri. On the way, he was confronted a number of times by people that asked him if he was the @#%#$%#@$ Mormon they were looking for. He denied it every time, denied he was a Mormon, and denied a lot of things that he believed. He justified it because it saved his life. He felt that he didn't do anything wrong.
