Do some searchs on the great scattering. Do a search on Eridu and all of the writings they had on the Flood.
Thanks Gaz, however I'm with John on the flood. The "Scattering" is even more problematic, to me.
Please understand, it is not necessesarily the flood story that is unbelievable WHEN it is in a localized context. It is when it is presented as Universal that it goes beyond reason.
Gaz, think "Universal"! Think gathering a male & female of every species on/in the planet Earth! Transporting them to the Ark. Then confining them, and the required food & water, for 40+ days and nights in a hand-made wooden vessel... It's a good story. It is simply not a true story.
Re the "Tower"... As a Theist, I cannot accept that omni- "God" would be threatened by any number of humans engaged in building a tower with primitive tools that would come any where near Kolob. Think of this Gaz: Even with our Space technics Kolob is out of reach! As an Atheist, there was no, is no, "God" to be threated by highly imaginative primitives who were on the bottom rung of human development... Again, it's a good story. It is simply not a true story.
Respectfully Gaz, such stories/legends/myths presented as factual, pragmatic experiences do a disservice to the youth to whom they are directed and meant to influence to believe in a non-existant imagined "God".
Note that I said, "...a non-existant imagined "God"." Which leaves the door open to discover the power through which we live, in the Universe we inhabit... The real "God". Gaz, I invite you to read my latest blog entry. It might help you to understand my understanding ;-)
"Can't be saved/progress in ignorance." (Joseph Smith) "Blind faith must give way to the light of knowledge." (RM) It is like the stone cut from the mountain. It roles forward by the very nature of which we are a part. Once rolling it cannot be stopped... Warm regards, Roger
