Didn't someone in the early Utah Church pay his tithing by giving a slave?

Can the historians on this board add some details to this?

Both.

Its possible.
I am currently reading Forgotten Kingdom: The Mormon Theocracy in the American West, 1847-1896 Book by David L. Bigler. In it he indicated there were several slaves then came to Utah in the initial 1847 migration.
God has the right to create and to destroy, to make like and to kill. He can delegate this authority if he wishes to. I know that can be scary. Deal with it.

I can't help but wonder why Joseph was trying to nullify part of the Lord's revelation. Any thoughts? I have my theory, but I am wondering what others think of this, if anything.

According to Jeremiah 18:7-10, we should be trying to nullify all kinds of revelations.

D&C 87 doesn't seem to follow that pattern. It doesn't read like a "repent and I will not destroy you" revelation. It just states what is about to happen.

Are we to believe that the Civil War was a punishment? For what? Slavery? Why was the North punished for the sins of the South? None of this addresses the fact that the "revelation" has some statements that don't match up with the Civil War.

Joseph Smith wrote:Verily, thus saith the Lord concerning the wars that will shortly come to pass, beginning at the rebellion of South Carolina, which will eventually terminate in the death and misery of many souls;
Considering what South Carolina had been up to, making any prediction about South Carolina starting a war did not take any great insight.
Joseph Smith wrote:And the time will come that war will be poured out upon all nations, beginning at this place. For behold, the Southern States shall be divided against the Northern States, and the Southern States will call on other nations, even the nation of Great Britain, as it is called, and they shall also call upon other nations, in order to defend themselves against other nations; and then war shall be poured out upon all nations.
The pouring out of war upon all nations is CLEARLY within the context of the war that South Carolina is going to start. That didn’t happen. The American Civil War did not pour out upon all nations.
Joseph Smith wrote:And it shall come to pass, after many days, slaves shall rise up against their masters, who shall be marshaled and disciplined for war. And it shall come to pass also that the remnants who are left of the land will marshal themselves, and shall become exceedingly angry, and shall vex the Gentiles with a sore vexation.
Did the Lamanites get involved in the Civil War? I don’t recall that from history class.
Joseph Smith wrote:And thus, with the sword and by bloodshed the inhabitants of the earth shall mourn; and with famine, and plague, and earthquake, and the thunder of heaven, and the fierce and vivid lightning also, shall the inhabitants of the earth be made to feel the wrath, and indignation, and chastening hand of an Almighty God, until the consumption decreed hath made a full fend of all nations; That the cry of the saints, and of the blood of the saints, shall cease to come up into the ears of the Lord of Sabaoth, from the earth, to be avenged of their enemies.
When exactly was this vengeance? Was that when their enemies forced them to stop polygamy? Or, was that when they handled those wicked emigrants from Arkansas?
Joseph Smith wrote:Wherefore, stand ye in holy places, and be not moved, until the day of the Lord come; for behold, it cometh quickly, saith the Lord. Amen.
But, not as quick as the war I guess.
