Since i'm kinda back...(AnotherMormonCorp Accounting Thread)

Post by _Mercury »

Jason, what can you think of outside a major class action lawsuit that could account for the need to make available publicly the church ledgers?

And speaking of legal action, the gifts I gave under false pretenses....for you legal types (excluding youknowwho)....What is the history of returning said funds?
And crawling on the planet's face
Some insects called the human race
Lost in time
And lost in space...and meaning

You might want to look into the legal history of lawsuits around the polygamous group in Manti. True and Living Church of Jesus Christ. Or something like that. It seems to me like an ex-member sued them to get back property they had consecrated to the TLC. I don't remember the outcome though.
(Nevo, Jan 23) And the Melchizedek Priesthood may not have been restored until the summer of 1830, several months after the organization of the Church.

I am not sure I understand. Are you saying what can make the church publish financial or what reason would they have to do so? I doubt a class action would do it. See more below.

I am not a legal type but I doubt there is much you can get any money back. It was considered a free will gift given without duress. I guess if you can show the threat of no temple and thus no exaltation as duress you might have a case. But I think it is a long shot. For the same reasons I think a class action would fail.

There is one thing that would cause the church to publish financial information and that is a large threat of members stopping contributions. But that is never going to happen. Most members think it quite ok that the Church has closed books and even get a bit testy when one suggests this is a bad practice.
