Yep, I agree. However, I think you are confusing sin with "social issues".

Sin
Home > Library > Literature & Language > Dictionary
n.
Theology.
1. Deliberate disobedience to the known will of God.
2. A condition of estrangement from God resulting from such disobedience.

There is no God.
Anything formulated based only on the definition of (any) god doesn't exist.
Sin doesn't exist.

- To assert that the earth revolves around the sun is as erroneous as to claim that Jesus was not born of a virgin. - Cardinal Bellarmine at the trial of Galilei

Moksha, thanks for the OP. Nice to know there are some who can see through the darkening glass. Question is how does this bode for Mormonism?

As some of many who have ridden their slide from the top, to crash at the bottom then clean-up their act, come off of their drugs and reconstitute themselves to greater success...maybe LDSism will do likewise??? I hope it does. LOT of repentence required but, maybe, eh?

Maybe I am the lone dissenter, but I totally disagree with the OP. There hasn't been a shift at all. The church today isn't a bit more wedded to conservativism and the Republican party than it was when I was a child. I remember the ERA and the 1980 elections, when Reagan was seen as a nearly messianic figure by a lot of Mormons. And the firings at BYU had to do with religious orthodoxy, not political allegiance. The idea that the church has crept right and more Republican over the last twenty years is ludicrous.

If anything, the country has crept away from the GOP and the conservatives, exposing the church for what it has been for along time: a primarily right-wing organization.

Well, if you focus on the politics of Reed Smoot, J. Reuben Clark or E.T. Benson, you might come away with that conclusion, but at this point Bill was on a roll.

As Roger pointed out, it need not be this way and we could get back to just being a Church.
