I wonder if one of the reasons the church doesn't pursue other states as vigorously if at all is because of the negative press generated by the California experience?
I thought it was interesting that the start of the "think it over for yourselves" thing mentioned was with Brigham, not Joseph.

(Nevo, Jan 23) And the Melchizedek Priesthood may not have been restored until the summer of 1830, several months after the organization of the Church.
