I think this a gross oversimplification. There are plenty of Muslim men who treat their wives with love and respect. Likewise there are plenty of Mormon men who do likewise.

If, as a man, you are a jackass -- I think you are going to be a jackass no matter what religion you subscribe to.

Sir,

May I inquire as to what is a gross oversimplication? That is, my friend, a scathing rebuke to my idea about religion and the patriarchy.

Your comment:
Patriarchal religions facilitate the abuse and oppression of women. It is indeed an unfortunate example of a male-controlled society when religion is used as a vehicle for the projection of control.

Is a gross oversimplification. Not that I don't think you have a valid point. You certainly do. However, I think it can be argued that misogyny is a product of the wider culture and that religion simply reflects and reinforces this misogyny. To claim that religion, in itself, facilitates misogyny takes too much responsibility from the men who, for whatever reason, choose to be misogynistic and abusive.

Indeed, the majority of men in patriarchal religions do not abuse their wives and daughters. Some do. However, I would venture to guess that, if not for the existence of the patriarchal religion, these men would simply find another way to justify their flawed and immoral behavior.

Unfortunately, the "all or nothing" style of Mormonism can attract wackos like this. Another example of abuse, in my opinion, is the article published in the most recent issue of the Ensign: a single mother wrote she would rather starve her children than not pay tithing.

I'm glad I'm not the only one that thought that article was messed up. They make it sound like lining these guys pockets is the most important thing in the world. I think the government should step in and regulate these cults and the way they manipulate people. The story claims it was someone writing in to the Ensign but was most likely ficticious as a way of manipulating people into sending in tithing despite the rough economy. God will judge the LDS church and the abuses it dishes out. What this guy did to his daughter is only following suit with the way the church treats its members in general.
