John,
What I wonder is if it would be better if the tithing issue were completely left out of it. For instance, the church definitely lies about its history and practices for the sake of padding its membership numbers. They probably get 10x the amount of converts by being deceptive than they would if they told the truth. This lying results in addition to money lost through tithing, money lost through taking trips to the temple, temple clothes/garments, time lost in callings, time lost at the ward itself, etc. All-in-all the damages would be way over tithing and any kind of spiritual promises. I'm wondering if the fact that a deception took place with how a person was lured into the church would make a difference. (ex. deceptive information, false advertising, lying about the history, lying about doctrine, etc.)

Check out this case.
U.S. v. Ballard http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_v._Ballard
I think Justice Jackson's dissenting opinion is a classic. I don't think it will work, but who knows.....
for what it's worth, Justice Jackson is the 'Nüremberg trials' Justice Jackson, and one of the greatest writers to have ever sat on the Supreme Court.
It's going to be a tough one trying to get into one's head (beliefs).

I detest my loose style and my libertine sentiments. I thank God, who has removed from my eyes the veil...
