It's official

Post by _Scottie »

I got my official letter from the COB stating that my name has been removed from the records of the LDS church.

I am no longer a Mormon.

Let the wild rumpus begin!!

I must say, it was a pleasant experience. I didn't meet any resistance, and it was handled effectively, efficiently and within a reasonable amount of time. Kudos to the church for this!

I bet you feel dark and loathesome already.

Some Schmo,

The problem is that now Scottie cannot sin. There is no external, third party source to interpose any standards or identify any conduct as "sin." Now Scottie does as Scottie pleases. Whatever he chooses to do is, by definition, allowable. (Of course, I am speaking outside the context of society and laws, but those violations are crimes, not sins.)

Now, Scottie can no longer enjoy the guilty pleasures of doing something wrong. You see, you have to subscribe to a belief system in which the act is made wrong for the pleasure of violation to be spiced with guilt.

When Scottie now drinks a beer, so what?

Scottie's courage is nonetheless laudable in having had his name removed.

Regards,

Spider.

STTF makes a good point. Since I do not believe in any god and am no longer affiliated with any religion, it essentially makes it impossible for me to sin.

Which (by some logic) makes you a candidate to die on a cross for all humanity's sins.

You mean he can't just arbitrarily think something is wrong and then do it anyway for the guilty pleasure?

Because when it comes right down to it, it doesn't matter where the idea comes from; all that matters is that you think it to get the full effect.

by the way, I've never understood the "pleasure from doing something wrong" idea. I understand the pleasure of defying authority, for instance. But I don't get just doing something because you think it's wrong for the simple "guilty pleasure" of it all. How is guilt "spicy?" That doesn't make any sense to me.

Wait a second... that means Jesus was never a Christian!

Not quite, because I haven't lead a "sinless" life.

At one point, I did believe in God, and did sin. So put away your wood beams and railroad spikes.
