The guy in the blog has an extremely theocratic attitude. His theology has to win at all costs: has to win the most converts, has to win the top government position, has to win at American Idol, etc. And from what I gather, he is totally used to winning and this is very much a part of his ego. There is no need to engage his "reasons" because they are merely rationalizations to justify his tribal badge. You called it, Runtu. The man is a bigot. Enough said.

I love it how he kind of puts down secular people because they wouldn't necessarily be bothered by some of Romney's idiosyncratic beliefs. Well, he may not realize it, but that's because we secular folk are quite accustomed to looking past the peculiar beliefs of our neighbors -- including the ones who worship a crucified zombie (a.k.a. "Christians") -- and voting for people who we think can do the job. It is not the most important thing for the president to be part of my particular "tribe". I'm certainly not holding out for a scientist or an atheist to become President in my lifetime.

I think that Evangelicals are scared of associating with Mormons because of their inclination to 'sheep steal". I have been to many interchurch meetings like the Emmaus walk or carols by candlelight and I do not see any effort on the part of the churches to attempt to take members away from other churches. They accept each other despite their theological differences as legitimate christians.
I have a friend who is a christian who had a Mormon neighbour whose children his own children played with. Both parents had conversations about religion. The Mormons sent the missionaries around. My friend who had a theology degree agreed to chat. At the end of all the discussions my friend told the missionaries that they were happy with their own church. The Mormon neighbours avoided my friends family from then on.

Some online forums I watch have about emptied of meaningful LDS discussion in the last couple of years. The constant inaccurate seething of evangelicals has drowned out all useful ideas and the Mormons have pretty much just left.

Oddly, I've changed sides and find myself pointing out problems with the haters now instead of the Mormons.

They are winning their war by redefining the word Mormon, something they have been historically pretty good at in politics.

So as some of you know, I lived on a fundamentalist Bible camp for a while in foster care. As part of this, I was required to attend various Bible study classes.

In one of those classes, there was an exercise where people were asked to divide into groups and play the role of the Devil. Each team was asked to come up with a Church designed by Satan that would be the most effective at pulling people away from Jesus Christ.

Every single group came up with the same outline: Devise a Church that looked as Christian as possible, especially in what they considered good behavior, but had false doctrines that would cause people to pull away from Jesus. It was a variation on the idea that Satan is the best student of the Bible so he can better trick you line of thinking.

I think there are plenty of evangelicals who see Mormonism in this.

Can't speak for simon, but sure, EV's typically are terrified of me since they see how other EV's tend to become converted to the Gospel of Jesus Christ or less sure of their own contraBiblical faith.
