I'm curious, malaise, on what do you base your evaluation that I have a "pathetic need to feel connected" to people I don't know?

Tell me what you think you know about me that confirms that description.

Do you disagree that a sense of belonging is paramount to our health and development as human beings?

Keep in mind that my comments regarding a "sense of belonging" were applicable to why NOM's might choose to stay in the church.

If you are smart enough to realize that the Mormon church is fake after being raised in the church you should be smart enough to see the negative effect that it has on people. The sense of community you get does not justify being part of a sexist, racist and homophobic organization.

Uhh...come close...I have to whisper something in your ear...are you ready....you wrote nonsense. Thank you very much.

Because of the LDS church women are taught that they are inferior in a number of subtle ways, homosexuals are taught that they are evil, and people miss out on a number of enjoyable life experiences (like drinking) that could have improved that only life they are going to get.

Uhh...I want to whisper something in your ear...come closer...yea, that right....are your ready....you wrote nonsense.

Homosexuals are not taught that they are evil. I have known no classes for homosexuals in the LDS church where they are taught they are evil. LDS women may be the most educated women in the world. And the kegging that LDS missed out in college was not exactly fun. But it did save them from pretty nasty hangovers.

I like a little ketchup, like on hashbrowns, and a little Billy Joel, like NEW YORK STATE OF MIND.

The church gives gay people all sorts of psychological trauma. I don't think there's any question of that.

Malaise wrote:Most people learn that homosexuals are evil at church. Whether or not your children did is also irrelevant. the plural of anecdote is not data.

Would you mind answering my question regarding your background as far as the Church is concerned? I am having a really hard time seeing things from your perspective.

First of all, the Church doesn't teach that homosexuals are evil. It teaches that homosexuality is evil. There is a difference. If I really have to explain that difference to you, then there is really no need to continue our conversation.

As far as my anecdote being irrelevant, how so? I am 47 years old, and have been a member of the LDS Church my entire life. I would think that an anecdote from a living, breathing Church member would certainly be relevant to your discussion. Lostindc's anecdotes are also valid. What "facts" are you referring to? Do you have statistical data on the issues you raised? If so, I would like to see it.

Also, even if you HAVE statistical data, statistics can be skewed, based on how the study was done, and who conducted it.

I agree that being part of the Mormon culture and being gay are two diametrically different lifestyles that can cause excessive emotional and psychological stress.

However, the actual gospel teaching of homosexuality being evil is prevalent in MANY Christian religions, not just Mormonism. The reason that it more deeply affects those who are Mormon is because Mormonism is an overall culture, rather than a simple church that people attend on Sundays.

Agreed. Again, Malaise, this goes back to my having a hard time seeing where you are coming from. If you already introduced yourself to the forum, or previously explained your connection to the Church, would you mind referring me to that thread?

Also, do you not belong to any organizations which you feel are helpful to you from an emotional standpoint?
