Off topic: Mormonism and the arts

He never gives examples, probably because he's terrified of having his tastes criticized. So of course this presents a problem, since you can't have a detailed and interesting discussion without citing specific examples.

But here's a bit of food for thought: Wallace Stegner once said that he thought the best Mormon writer would wind up being an apostate. What do you think about that? Agree? Disagree?

Mods, god love each of you for all the time and effort you put into a largely thankless job, but I think we might have overdone it a little bit on the "Mormonism and the arts" thread. Was this single post of Scratch's really worthy of being split into its own thread? While we're at it, were each of these spin-off threads really necessary?

Overkill, guys - total overkill. If this is the direction the board is going, I think things are going to be a lot more difficult around here for moderators and board members alike (and whatever lurkers might be trying to follow a conversation spread over six threads and two kingdoms). Let's make life a little easier for everyone: chill.

Much love.

Particularly when Scratch's Wallace Stegner quote was about as on topic as possible.

Anyone who wants to take over this job is welcome to it. If Shades wants it restored, he can restore it. I can split; I can't merge. Deal.
(Nevo, Jan 23) And the Melchizedek Priesthood may not have been restored until the summer of 1830, several months after the organization of the Church.

Omg, harm! I just logged in to say the same thing! Splitting off posts is, well, it's like the bitch of all time. I don't recall having ever merged threads, but I assume that would be well, like the second most bitch of all time.

;-)

I did toss my hat in for new mods along with others however, it looks like Shades has dropped it. In any case, you guys are doing just fine.

I ain't lyin'

Trash,

In order to split threads like that, the mods have to first open the thread and then pick off the category of posts they are trying to remove. They have to go back through the dialogue (when the could be posting themselves, you know?) and decide where to begin picking off the posts they need to move.

When they do that, they are trying to maintain even the integrity of the derail.

In the case of the arts thread, it looks like the thread was split multiple times due to derailments or non-Terrestrial comments.

Yes, they could have been merged, but seriously, if one of four moderators hit all of those splits, they might not have noticed that others had split remarks prior.

I think the thing here is that we need to remember that there are 4 mods in and out of here, doing their best to moderate the board and like, you know, they might actually like wanna enjoy you know, like posting on the board you know, like as a man and not a, like you know, moderator and if folks have a big hairy problem with that, I suppose they could like, you know like, follow the rules of the board.

Don't get me wrong -- I love all our mods and they do a bang-up job round these here parts. The freedom this board allows is why I post here, and I totally recognize and appreciate the integral part the mods play in preserving this cool vibe I dig so much. But, holy crap, too much is too much - and a single thread resulting in 5 spin-off threads is just too much.

But given all that the mods do on a daily basis of which I don't disapprove (on their own time, for free, with little thanks or recognition), I suppose bitching about the one thing they did that did irk me makes me come off as a bit ungrateful, and for that I apologize.

Mods, you're doing the Lord's work here. Keep it up. This is now a mod appreciation thread.
