I think it goes like this:

They think the reason they stay is 100% testimony/spirit/conviction. Then, they learn weird stuff. Then they discover the reason they stay is 50% social, 50% testimony.

What they don't realize is that the social was a big reason the WHOLE TIME. They just never realized it.
Oh for shame, how the mortals put the blame on us gods, for they say evils come from us, but it is they, rather, who by their own recklessness win sorrow beyond what is given... Zeus (1178 BC)

Many non-100%-believing members consider active religious participation to be important. They believe that the Mormon church is as good or better than most religions and that, if no one faith is 100% true, there is no reason to leave the church.
"I have more to boast of than ever any man had. I am the only man that has ever been able to keep a whole church together since the days of Adam. ... Neither Paul, John, Peter, nor Jesus ever did it. I boast that no man ever did such a work as I." - Joseph Smith, 1844

why me wrote:I have seen bart on the taliban catholic site. I think that many catholics who are critical of the LDS faith can not see the imperfections in their own faith and its history and how history has been treated in the catholic church. It is quite amazing really. But such is the human being. We are not perfect.

I think that if were not for James Madison asking Congress to declare war in 1812, the hair implant industry would be much more lucrative and the Big Mac would have been a complete bust.

All of the reasons given in this thread play a part, I'm sure.

I would hazard a guess that it's fifty/fifty

50% really have a testimony
50% have family ties that keep them in

About 30% of all members hold a TR and there is 50% attendance. So it's more like 60-40.

Good luck with that Mormon women!

So...what does that mean, exactly? Are you saying that if one doesn't have a temple recommend that they are not believing?

Where does that leave children under 12 who can't do baptisms for the dead? Where does that leave someone who is in a repentance process? Are they any less of a true believer simply because they don't hold a piece of paper? Does that mean that you are now admitting that Harmony, a current temple recommend holder, is a true believer? Stop the presses! ;-)

(I haven't picked on you for a while, BC....I thought it was time. LOL)
