Sounds like that removed teacher was a victim of our modern seminary education system. Don't blame the teacher, blame the lack of accurate history available to him.

You can help by joining the PTA. Help insist that the next generation of seminary students know math and history.

bcspace wrote:No indication which ideas got him canned. Probably not the first one as it's similar to the aformentioned D&C section. But based on the information provided, he certainly is going well beyond the scope.

He should have been corrected and then if he disagreed with correction or continued anyway, then removed.

We have to take this very seriously, Space. These are young, impressionable minds. You have to get the indoctrination right. This guy needs to be called in for a court of love and disciplined. They should take all of his church privileges for one year (except for the tithe, of course).

I saw the title to this thread and thought the same thing.

But seriously, even I wouldn't teach about Joseph Smith's wine the afternoon of his martyrdom. At least not to kids.

Nor would I teach how many wives he had (okay, THAT I might give passing reference to because it is important that Joseph Smith initiated the practice of plural marriage). The part about the "many children" I would not have taught, mainly because I do not know that to be correct, and actually haven't heard this anywhere. I doubt it is true.

The part about the handshakes is in Doctrine and Covenants. Shouldn't Mormons have some grasp of their own scriptures? (Looks like others have already posted about this.)

And I doubt I would make an announcement on my last day about being "outed" for teaching "apostate" ideas; I would just try to teach the best lesson I ever taught. Sort of like the "last lecture" series.

In the final analysis, though, it is unfortunately teachers like this that make the LDS leadership crack down so heavily on slavishly following the manual, which in turn limits all lessons to Primary level.

All the Best!

Too bad he didn't elaborate about whicch lessons were considered apostate. Now every lesson he taught is suspect.
(Nevo, Jan 23) And the Melchizedek Priesthood may not have been restored until the summer of 1830, several months after the organization of the Church.
