The race card does work against the church IMHO, but it would be pretty weak against Mitt Romney personally.

I think it is more than mildly embarrassing.
But good for George Romney.
It does give Mitt a good answer to the issue.
The question is whether he will use it.
I think the nation would cheer to hear the response that his Dad went against this "personal" directive on official Church stationary.
But what would the Mormons think?
Especially the Mormons in the top floors of the COB?
Similarly, I think Mitt should respond to the (unlikely) question about the Aaronic Priesthood Manual that he disagrees with that sentiment, and that he had already sent a certified letter to Church Headquarters (waves letter in air) to register his position.
These are winning answers . . . for a presidential election.
